Can someone explain to me how the leafs are considered to have a “Loaded” roster.

Matthews - Superstar top 3 in the game
Marner - Superstar top 5 winger in the game
Tavares declining vet still a very good 2LC
Nylander - very good winger
Bunting - breakout season but can he replicate
Kerfoot - meh, may need to be moved for cap
Decent 3rd line
4th line is an embarrassment

Reilly - legit top pair D
Brodie - good complementary D
Muzzin - declining injury prone
Gio - 38 yo but still good
Lillegrin - maybe ?
Holl - Trash
Sandin (unsigned)

Murray/Samsonov ??????

Good roster but not loaded.

They will struggle with the cap this season as they are 1.8M over without Sandin signed.

They had 54 wins last season, which happened because they had a loaded roster.

Definitely got worse this off-season though:

In:
Murray
Samsonov
Jarnkrok
Robertson
Gaudette

Out:
Campbell
Mrazek
Mikhayev
Kase
Spezza

They will likely still contend next season though, unless Murray and Samsonov shit the bed.

Did they really have a loaded roster?

In the Atlantic there were 4 teams that make the playoffs. If you took 15 points from each, gave them to the 4 that didn't make it, the same 4 teams make the playoffs and Toronto has 100 points. The point distribution if you did that would be normal. Last year was an anomaly unlike we've ever previously seen.

All 4 Atlantic teams, actually all 8 eastern teams, benefitted from 8 weak teams.

There were 8 playoff teams. I bet only 1 can improve on last year's point totals.

Great deal for Florida, getting Tkachuk can only help their playoff aspirations. They got pushed around by Tampa & now will fight back.

Long gone are the days where a civil engineer (college certificate) working for the city, could buy a nice little starter home (without any inheritance money) in the GTA, with his new wife, on one income.

Then when the first kid arrives, sell that and move to the outskirts of Ottawa and buy a much larger house with a large yard on that same single income, and raise 3 children.

Eventually somehow being able to move to a house in Manor Park of all places for everyone’s teenaged years.

A quaint old-timey tale when folks could buy a house if they had a decent job, and one parent could even afford to stay home and raise the kids if they wanted to.

I’m not one for too much nostalgia, but the death of this past reality really sucks.

Bobby, it’s just a step back. You can leapfrog it and come out ahead. Don’t worry about what others think. Everyone has their shit. We love you brother.

I think society had a large hand in that death. That story is not unlike my own except I have 4 kids.

Times change. People change. If I had 5 bucks for every time someone looked at my wife thinking she was too lazy to "work" I'd be rich. Today, people want two cars in the driveway, a big house, out of country vacations, and every kid equipped with an iPhone. And if that's what you want, ya, it's pretty much out of reach for the single income family.

Keep up the fight Bobby

Siegenthaler, who I've never seen play but had amazing metrics as a defensive dman and just had a great breakout year signed 5 years at 3.4M, which seems like a steal.

Good comp for Zubby.

Defensive D-men don't really get "paid". The biggest contract Marc Methot got was 4.9 AAV x 4 years

Zub is most likely looking at 4.5 AAV x 5-6 years

I have seen some 5-6 AAV suggestions but Zub simply doesn't have the numbers for that. It would be massive overpay

Sobriety is an every day battle. It can be so easy to slip. Hopefully he's getting the love he needs and not the judgement that doesnt help anyone. Its all about how you bounce back. Do you let the demons win, or will you get right back on that horse?

Thats good to see.

Zub is so much better than Methot though. In almost every aspect aside from physical play and even there it's not like it's a weakness for Zub.

So I don't see why his agent would accept a contract even lower than Methots which was signed in a lower cap league. 5+ easy I think.

I don't know, we're almost 10 years removed from his prime, NHL has continued to evolve so a similar player today is often going to be seen as "better"

Marc Methot was pretty good defensively and brought a very nice physical dimension but he was a black hole on offense outside of his shot. Zub is better offensively, sure but that's not with this part that he'll earn most of his money.

Look at contracts for most of the guys named in that thread. For example, Erik Cernak who got a 5.2 AAV extension. Do you think Zub is better or even as good?

Bobby needs to go see a therapist and sort out the facade that he's putting on. Wish his family the best and for him to turn his life around.

Seems like a dick thing to say. Sobriety isn't some facade. It's a daily struggle. That's not at all faking your way though life. I'm hoping you meant something different, because that's one heaping pile of BS

It's a huge problem and I hope he beats his alcohol addiction.

How do you know that he isn't already?
I'd be surprised if he didn't already. Probably was mandated by the NHL when he was under contract.

Once you've seen a therapist, you're over that hump that stops many people from seeking counselling and it's a lot easier to go back for more help because you can see through the stigma.

Probably not a facade. Relapse can happen even if everything is going perfectly well. It's not a weakness or a choice. It can just happen. Same way I sometimes say I'm not going to drink tonight because I'm tired and then end up getting a pint anyways.

Weird... Dustin Brown retires, and they retire his number and built him a statue. I guess retiring his number is ok (I'm not sure I'm fully sold but not being an LA fan I don't have the same attachment to their players) but a statue???

Heck, even the number retirement... does that mean they're going to retire Doughty, Quick and Kopitar's numbers too?

2 Cups in the town where they worship success and stardom - seems about right. This is about the Kings wanting things for their fans to worship and blowing it up as big as it can be so the Kings appear important, L.A. is the world capital of Ass-kissing and sucking up, Dustin Brown is getting the standard L.A. retirement package
