Did the NHL misplace the list? Someone fugged this up.

"Dreger reported earlier Monday that part of the delay in processing the deal was due to the NHL not having Dadonov's no-trade list on record. Furthermore, neither team involved in the deal was aware that Anaheim was on Dadonov's list." TSN.

This almost reminds me of when John Spano wanted to buy the Islanders. The NHL assumed the Islanders were doing the due diligence on Spano and the Islanders assumed the NHL had vetted him.

I can't really think of a f***up like this since Tallon forgot how to work a fax machine

A decade before that, Lou Lamoriello had a similar screwup and forgot to officially file qualifying offers on Brian Rafalski and John Madden. As a result both were suddenly UFAs and Lou had to quickly sign them to (relatively) lucrative extensions to save face. Re-reading the article and it's amusing to see that current Florida GM Bill Zito was the agent for Rafalski/Madden.

Oddly this might have helped them dodge a bullet on Bobby Holik. With the extra money allocated towards Rafalski/Madden, the team dragged its heels on extending Holik. The team eventually offered him 5 years, 40 million which he would have happily signed earlier. But his ego was bruised that they waited until free agency and he signed with the Rangers for 5 years, 45 mil.

Technically Vegas could still trade Dadonov but anybody involved would be ineligible for the rest of the regular season. If I had to guess the 10 teams on his NTC:

high tax: Anaheim, Los Angeles, Montreal, New Jersey, San Jose
teams with cap space: Arizona, Buffalo, Columbus, Detroit, Seattle

He probably wouldn't bother listing a team like Toronto, Edmonton, or Winnipeg since they were near the cap. I also forgot that his deal is backloaded and he's due 6.5 million in real money next season. That'll be a tough one to unload.

I think you mean ineligible to play in the playoffs. That's my understanding away. I want Vegas to get screwed, but I don't see a way that happens without also screwing Dadonov and/or Stone, so it's really a shit situation.

That's what I thought till today when I read it's ineligible to play period.
I agree I want Vegas to get screwed over here. Feel for Dadonov

That's what I had thought too but there's been some clarification today in light of the Dadonov saga. Apparently you could hypothetically sign a UFA after the deadline and they could play in the regular season and not the playoffs (Boston/Marty Turco). But if you were already in the league, you can't even play in the regular season if you are dealt after the deadline.

Scenario that popped in my head was the 2007 Islanders who were battling for one of the final playoff spots. Rick DiPietro got concussed with seven games left in the season. Backup Mike Dunham had been subpar all season so they ended up riding with AHL callup journeyman Wade Dubieliwicz. Islanders improbably got in on the last game. But I guess this explains why they didn't try to get a short term goalie to finish the season; DiPietro returned for Game 2 of the playoffs.

Edit: Now that I'm in that 2007 mindspace, that was a hilarious end to that season. On the final Thursday, this was the standings.

8. Canadiens (89 points - 42 wins - 2 games remaining
9. Leafs (89 points - 39 wins - 2 games remaining)
10. Islanders (86 points - 38 wins - 3 games remaining)

Toronto controlled its fate with its final two games being against NYI/MON. But they lost 5-2 to the Islanders but they were still alive thanks to Montreal losing as well. Going into the final weekend:

8. Canadiens (90 points - 42 wins - 1 game remaining)
9. Leafs (89 points - 39 wins - 1 game remaining)
8. Islanders (88 points - 39 wins - 2 games remaining)

There was a Saturday Hockey Night in Canada game with Montreal@Toronto. The Leafs needed to win in regulation to have any chance at the playoffs. Wild game, Toronto has an early 3-1 second period lead that suddenly turns into a 5-3 deficit. Toronto rallies and wins it 6-5 in regulation to eliminate Montreal.

Simultaneously, the Islanders pull out a road game against Philadelphia to remain alive. Toronto gets the 8th seed as long as the Islanders don't get two points in their final game. The Islanders finish the season on the road against the division champion Devils. That year, Brodeur had started 78 out of 81 games to that point. Unfortunately for Toronto, the Devils opted to rest Brodeur in the season finale since our seeding was already set.

From what I remember, it was a pretty boring game with the Islanders cruising to a 2-0 lead. Naturally every Toronto fan is pissed at the Devils for starting Scott Clemmensen and otherwise having the intensity of a preseason game. John Madden scores with 4 minutes left to cut the lead in half. Then he scores to tie the game with 1 second left in regulation. Suddenly every Leaf fan is now cheering for the Devils again.

The game goes to shootout. Miro Satan and Zach Parise both score to start things off. Shootout ace Viktor Kozlov converts for the Islanders and Brian Gionta is denied. Ryan Smyth can't seal the win. The Devils then for some reason send out utility man Sergei Brylin instead of Patrik Elias. Brylin is stopped and the Islanders are in the playoffs.

One thing's for sure, Vegas is quickly becoming a place players won't want to go.

Ultimately players don't care. They're all in it for themselves and the money. Not that they shouldn't be; this is a job. One guy in, next guy out. As long as it isn't a year after year total circus like Arizona, good players go where the money and/or wins are. Vegas is still a go to place. They freely spend money, and are still in every conversation.

I think eventually for star talent that can chose their location, this may drop Vegas down a notch or two. The tax will always help though

remember when Feaster offer sheeted for o'rielly and he would have had to clear waivers. Could have been hilarious.

I’ve always wondered, what would have actually happened should Sakic not have matched Feaster’s offer sheet. As it was revealed afterwards by Chris Johnston that because of an obscure clause about NHL’rs who play in any overseas leagues actually have to pass through waivers in such a transaction. (It was the season when O’Reilly and many others played in Europe that fall waiting on the NHLPA lawyers to settle with Bettman.)So theoretically, Colorado being 30th on the waiver wire, could have reclaimed him with the contract signed through Feaster, along with the offer sheet compensation. It would have been such a fiasco one has to believe a loophole would have been found, or it would have been as notorious a piece of trivia there is in hockey history. Maybe Colorado had no clue either.

Calgary is pounding the Sharks. What a concept.

Also saw McDavid get the puck in the left wing corner on the powerplay, make a pass, then skate through the middle of the slot to the other side and get the puck back. I didn’t know that was legal on the powerplay. Neither does Kopitar.

Vegas down 4-0. They're really struggling, they lit the Kings up though. I wonder what that says about us.

I wonder how Eichel will be feeling if they miss the playoffs.

Oilers blow a late lead and lose in regulation. Chance for kings to put two more points between it and the two closest pacific teams tonight.
