Random note I heard about Calgary today…not a single draft pick of theirs from last 5 years have played an NHL game yet.
But there have been concerns about Tkachuk for a good amount of time now and it really makes sense now that they lost a 100 point player for nothing.Eh, I'm still not sure I completely buy the rumor Tkachuk wants out. I'm sure there's a kernel of truth to it, but probably overstated.
Back in Lombardi's early years here, I regularly attended Kings' development camp. I wish I remembered the player's name, but there was a very brief rumor circling the message boards that the Kings were interested in a particular player.
The source? Some 12 year-old kid trying to eavesdrop through the curtains at camp who thought he heard a name.
Now, it didn't span quite as large as being broadcast on the air, but all it takes is someone to think they heard something, and then it morphs into speculation. Then it gets people asking others "is this true?"
I'm sure Sutter isn't the easiest coach to play for. And I'm sure Tkachuk thinks "damn. It sucks Gaudreau left." Who wouldn't? I don't think that's a reach. I'm just not sure that's enough where he will want to uproot his entire life and family to move to another team.
It will be interesting to see what Calgary does moving forward nonetheless. It always hurts to lose one of your better players for nothing - but, as we saw with the Isles and Tavares, it can be done.
Does Tarasenko still want out of St Louis? Might be able to make a deal if that's the case.
I'd be willing to form a small terrorist cell were this to happen.I agree with you on this point, and it is why I am somewhat concerned Quick won't get the HOF credit he deserves, and will end up as an LA King cult hero.
A big asterisk as he has Quicks Vezina. He absolutely deserves a Vezina, just not that one.THe problem isn't Quick, it's the market.
If Quick is NYR or MTL he's already in the HOF and they're writing songs about him right now.
Carey Price is just Jonathan Quick lite but in the right market.
Lundqvist is the standard bearer for consistency for that generation, he deserves his accolades, but with an asterisk for Quick outplaying him
I bet if the Sens really wanted to get it done, they could get Matthew Tkachuk rather easily for Tim Stutzle. They also would still have enough cap space to sign Nazem Kadri, and form the most hated line in the NHL with Brady Tkachuk, Nazem Kadri, and Matthew Tkachuk.
What's up with Calgary? Are the players already sick of Sutter?
According to news stories Kyrou might be traded to a prison cell.Yeah, this might be a fun domino effect to make the cap work. Just throwing some spaghetti against a wall:
STL: LW Matthew Tkachuk (RFA)
CGY: RW Jordan Kyrou (1x2.8), 2023 1st
Calgary gets back a young right shot winger who was a point per game last season. St. Louis' pick will probably be late, but might yield a decent prospect.
STL: LW Anthony Beauvillier (2x4.125)
NYI: RW Vladimir Tarasenko (1x7.5)
The Russians seemingly like the NY area. Islanders send some salary back the other way to leave enough cap space to extend Dobson/Romanov.
STL: year supply of Crazy Bread
DET: LD Torey Krug (5x6.5)
Krug has a NTC but maybe would be willing to waive to go to his de facto home town team. Wings get a much needed puck moving LD. Gives them a vet presence and they won't need to rush Simon Edvinsson. St. Louis can use Scott Perunovich to maybe be 70% Krug at a nearly 6 mil discount.
Tkachuk(9?)+Beauvillier(4.125)+Perunovich(.75) ~ 13.875
Tarasenko(7.5)+Kyrou(2.8)+Krug(6.5) ~ 16.8

the no state tax only applies to home games, so the math isn't so cut and dryProbably two fold, some players don't like the spotlight playing in Canada and would rather be able to live anonymously elsewhere. I remember a couple diehard Leafs fans following Steven Stamkos around when he met with Toronto during that free agency period and Stamkos commenting about his stalkers something like "this isn't helping Toronto's pitch."
Secondly the taxes is tough. Not surprisingly, Tkachuk's purported list has 4/5 teams in cities with no state income tax. Using CapFriendly's tax estimate:
9 million playing for Calgary ~ 4.7 mil in net income
9 million playing for Dallas ~ 5.339 in net income
9 million playing for Florida ~ 5.325 mil in net income
9 million playing for Nashville ~ 5.42 mil in net income
9 million playing for St. Louis ~ 4.88 mil in net income
9 million playing for Vegas ~ 5.32 mil in net income
Over a 7/8 year deal, the difference would add up.
honestly the shit building and crappy winters do not help sell this place eitherProbably two fold, some players don't like the spotlight playing in Canada and would rather be able to live anonymously elsewhere. Calculation:
- Federal Jurisdiction:
- American residents are not subject to Canadian taxes; therefore, duty days while in Canada are taxed at their local rate
- Canadian residents are not subject to American taxes; therefore, duty days while in the USA are taxed at their local rate. The current exchange rate is used to convert the respective income to CAD to estimate the tax rate (because all players are paid in USD)
- State/Provincial Jurisdiction:
- Provincial: Residents in Canada are not subject to "jock taxes" and therefore are taxed at their location of residence (assumed to be their teams home province)
- State: Residents of American teams are subject to "jock taxes", and are therefore taxed for their duty days at the local jurisdiction.
- Reciprocity agreements: Simplified by assuming the tax rate for the player is the maximum of: a) The local tax rate, or b) The players state residence tax rate (Example: A player visiting Florida (no State tax) from California, will be taxed at the California rates for their duty days in Florida)
Good.Dang. Calgary has had a rough offseason.
Blindside check into the boards with no call.
If you can’t make your life work for 4.7 million, you are a shit human.Probably two fold, some players don't like the spotlight playing in Canada and would rather be able to live anonymously elsewhere. Laine isn't signing with Calgary eitherTkachuk to Lumbus for Laine and a draft pick! Blue Jackets become a free agent destination!
