That team was never getting past Colorado.

You don’t let stars just walk. Sets your rebuild back drastically.

That is not how teams that are competitive think. Nobody was getting past Colorado, so everyone should trade their stars? What's the point, right?

A GM could never wave the white flag of trading Gaudreau at the deadline in a year where everything is going right.

Losing him might eventually cost him his job, but trading him at the deadline when you're a team with (the perception of, anyway) window open in 1st place will lose a job.

It's the same as Kopitar and the Kings in 2016, the only difference is Gaudreau doesn't want to be in Calgary.

This legit and elite contender or nothing mindset has infected too much of sports.

The guy is a douche-nozzle but he is good at hockey and it was probably smart of Edmonton to keep him as he had very good chemistry up on the top 6 and the deal would likely be fair to the team given all the noise surrounding him.

Campbell isn't an improvement over Mike Smith, besides Campbell being a good guy and Smith being a dick, they are basically the same player
With Smith being slightly better, especially this past season.

Depends on how it is presented. If everyone knows he’s gone a deal is more palatable. Real problem is that they didn’t seem to think it was a major possibility.

Now they have the exact same situation with MK who likely goes home to St. Louis.

Campbell and Smith had opposite seasons last year really. Campbell started fantastic and crashed; Smith started like the inconsistent knob he was known as and caught fire down the stretch.

Difference might be attitude, people seem to love Campbell, and while Smith is a battler, his constant need for attention and showing up his defense is absolute trash.

Smith seemed to have our number. We remade and basically developed Campbell. Hoping we have a better book on him.
I think Smith plays his best against us ever since the 2012 WCF series. He stood on his head and we still ran them over.

Lame, ESPN+ doesn't pick up the TSN stream until 11am.

Devils trade Pavel Zacha to Boston for Erik Haula. Gonna laugh if Zacha pulls a Sam Bennett. Will be interesting where Zacha falls in Boston's lineup. Marchand will be out until December, so Zacha might get to play on an all Czech line with Krejci and Pastrnak.

Hall-Bergeron-DeBrusk
Zacha-Krejci-Pastrnak
?-Coyle-Smith

I liked Haula as a free agent a couple years ago, but not sure where he fits now. Dawson Mercer split last season at C and RW.

?-Hischier-Bratt
Sharangovich-Hughes-Mercer
Tatar-Haula-Zetterlund
Wood-McLeod-Bastian

I figure Andreas Johnsson is going to a cap floor team (3.4 mil cap hit, 750K salary).

You can put Johnnie Hockey on the Devils 1st line. ;)
