He def had his own problems too as much as I liked him. The smoke about him being a pissy little bitch about demotion was plentiful.
Yeah, that is the bit that did surprise me because that hurts you no matter the organisation.

No, it's the 90s NYR :naughty:

Wasn't it the Bobby Holik contract that was the straw that broke the camel's back?
I think there were several straws that broke that camel. 😂

I'm convinced Malkin is signing in Washington; 4 years/6.25AAV

He'll retire the same time Ovi does.

If he's testing FA, then he's not going back to Calgary.

That leaves Edmonton, Vegas, and us as the front runners for the 3 playoff spots. And Edmonton probably loses Kane's production.

Edit: Definitely not returning to Calgary.

who has cap space to sign some of these pending high dollar FAs? Besides AZ since they won't be doing so obviously.

Edit -- found it (teams > $10M space)...some bad, bad teams (Ducks, Buff, RWs, AZ)
Here’s a look at every team’s available cap space entering free agency, listed from most space to least space (via Spotrac):
  • Anaheim Ducks: $39,423,333
  • Buffalo Sabres: $32,173,332
  • Detroit Red Wings: $31,021,111
  • Arizona Coyotes: $29,994,833
  • Calgary Flames: $26,925,000
  • New Jersey Devils: $25,334,168
  • Seattle Kraken: $22,885,834
  • Colorado Avalanche: $21,035,000
  • Ottawa Senators: $20,728,929
  • Chicago Blackhawks: $19,707,371
  • Carolina Hurricanes: $19,295,583
  • Dallas Stars: $18,560,834
  • Winnipeg Jets: $18,046,310
  • Columbus Blue Jackets: $16,916,605

Lou dodged a bullet with that one. Holik's ego was bruised when the Devils played hard ball in arbitration leading to his walk year. Lou eventually offered 5 years, 40 million but Holik had the Rangers offer.

I feel like the Devils are going to be used for leverage so Gaudreau can get a little bit more out of Philly. JVR might not be as expensive to trade off (7 mil cap hit, but only 4 mil in actual salary assuming his bonus is paid in one lump sum). Maybe a cap floor team would want him for nothing then spin him at the deadline for something (akin to Chicago with Fleury last year).

How does Johnny hit free agency? How did Calgary let that happen without getting compensation in a trade?

I know it’s largely on Gaudreau but it’s f***ed up. I’d be so pissed as a flame fan.

It happens, they were reasonably a contending team this season so they should have taken a chance with him. Could you imagine a scenario where they traded Gaudreau then lost to Edmonton? There's still some Devils fans who are mad that Lou didn't trade Parise in 2012. But they assume that there was some mythical offer with picks and A+ prospects.

If you're talking about trading Gaudreau's negotiating rights, that's probably a 3rd rounder at best. Don't think that'd be enough to placate any Flames fan right now.

That team was never getting past Colorado.

You don’t let stars just walk. Sets your rebuild back drastically.

Definitely would have been an underdog. The other thing is the revenue from making it another round. The Devils got four rounds of tickets in 2012 which isn't a trivial thing. I know we don't like to think of hockey as a business.

Ottawa maybe lucked out with the Sharks imploding and the Karlsson pick turning into a top 5 pick in a deep draft. Meanwhile they were only able to turn Mark Stone into Erik Brannstrom which most people liked at the time. They turned Matt Duchene into a mid-1st.

Devils got back an okay package for Taylor Hall but he made it obvious that he wasn't sticking around so he was easier to trade that Parise who at least seemed receptive to the idea.

Gaudreau would have been a tough one to trade. The market would have been limited in terms of teams who could have extended him. As a pure rental, I don't know if he's fetching enough to make you not take a chance at a Cup with him.

Maybe so but at the deadline you could try to get something. Anyway, Johnny seems to have led them on all the way.

I still think New Jersey makes the most sense for Johnny. Hope the flyers do not clear space for him, but would not shock me if they do.

Disagree many thought Calgary would play like a Sutter team and was one of the few teams that had a chance a beating Colorado. Similar to Vegas the year before.

A GM could never wave the white flag of trading Gaudreau at the deadline in a year where everything is going right.

Losing him might eventually cost him his job, but trading him at the deadline when you're a team with (the perception of, anyway) window open in 1st place will lose a job.

Yup, no way was Johnny being traded after the season started.

But this is one that bites a Canadian team where it many times benefits them, he probably just wanted to go home and play.

Will be interesting to see what Calgary does here, I don't think they can win a cup without Gaudreau.

Calgary could trade for Kane, but would Kane want to go there for 1 season? If you swap out Gaudreau for Kane you have a roster that could contend if things fell right. Kane isn't all-in for a ring though.
