Duncan Keith reportedly going to retire

"Due to NHL rules, because Keith is going to retire, the Hawks will endure a recapture penalty for the cap space they saved during the first 11 years of his 13-year contract. They will over north of $7 million over the next two seasons."

Damn I have some Hawks friends are they pretty devastated and depressed the past few days. I get that both our teams won championships in the past decade but it's hard not to see how cra cra Hawks organization is right now.

Makes no sense some of their moves and recent moves in the past year or two.

Herby touched on this and made a good point. Basically it's race to the bottom for Bedard. Look to them to be worst of the league for the next 5 years or so. Try to get multiple top 5 picks and see if that can develop into a Colorado type team.

The Jones trade seems really, really baffling for this, but it is what it is.

Their last GM was going for it, hence the Jones move. He gets ousted due to scandal, new guy comes in and decides to blow it up.

I think Bowman was still very high on Dach...guy had 10 points in 18 games in 2021 after the wrist injury. Thinks Jones can be his #1 defenseman for years to come and Dach will be his #1C. Probably kind of tossed out the 2021 season due to Toews not playing...maybe thinks Kubalik is more 2020 and '21.

He was obviously wrong and most of us panned the trade and contract but he's a guy that believed in the dudes that got him three Cups, much like Lombardi believed in his dudes.

They just made three 1st round picks and have two 1sts in each of the next two drafts as long as Tampa doesn't implode since the picks are Top 10 protected. I'd prefer they squeezed at least some sort of protected 1st round pick to go along with the Debrincat trade but they are fully tanking.

It's kind of like "why sign a 35+ year old winger for three seasons at $6MM per if you are just going to blow the team up come January?".

Forgive me for being out of the loop, but was there any talk of banning Russian players from playing in North America because of the Ukraine invasion.

Russian athletes are barred from competition in almost every civilized nation while the NHL seems to have gone "Putin, what Putin?"

If Duncan Keith retires shouldnt the oilers have to absorb some sort of cap penalty? Im guessing because he didnt sign an over 35 (?) contract it doesnt happen. (or am i out to lunch?)

Surely if you trade for a player over 35yrs old you should have the same responsibility, otherwise you could just bully the player to retire with shit ice time etc.

Kaprizov didn't have a work visa. Ok, for that reason, I can see him being turned away.

And he made the mistake of trying again within a short period of time. A different entry point will honor the refusal of entry from a prior attempt. And a second refusal makes it more difficult to get in from what I understand..

The question is, why was he trying to get into the US so soon after leaving? Sure it's the US vs. Russia. But it's not quite two months since the wild were eliminated.

Because he wants to be in the US so he can train with his team? Seems like the logical answer. It's not like October is far away.

Russia is in a Full-Scale war right now. Any Russian citizen who hasn't served in the Military, and who has been living in another country, who then returns to their home country, and is of age, is expected to serve.

Now do I agree with that? No, I don't. But we don't make the rules for players from other countries. He should've taken that into consideration before leaving the US while his country is in an war that has political & international repercussions.

I do think he will eventually cleared to return, though.

How does barring Russian athletes who had absolutely nothing to do with invading Ukraine solve anything?

Is that individual Russian athletes playing for whatever team, or is that Russian athletes on a national team?

Saw this earlier and spit out my drink, Guerin has always been one of my favorites

(long story warning)

Guerin was an early favorite of mine back before I knew anything about his draft pedigree. So it was oddly gratifying when he became a 40 goal scorer after being traded. My first Devils jersey I debated between Brodeur or Guerin; Might have gone Guerin but I didn't like #12. Instead many years later I had a 2002 era Team USA jersey personalized with Guerin #13.

As part of my vacation in 2015, I went to the NHL Awards show in Vegas and then the draft in Florida. Right before I left, I checked the presenters and saw that Guerin was one of them. So I tossed that USA jersey in my luggage in the off chance I ran into him.

I decided to be silly and wear a suit to the awards show. The NHL production people screwed up and booked Daughtry to play a full concert after the show concluded. 90% of the crowd vacated the arena before they took the stage. So they implored anybody sticking around to come down to the floor where the players had been.

I sat through a couple songs, but reaffirmed that Daughtry isn't my cup of tea. So I walked up to a security guard to ask where the nearest exit was and she pointed in a certain direction. Next thing I know I'm backstage. Since the band was still playing, she probably couldn't hear me and assumed since I was in a suit that I was asking where the other VIPs were.

I loitered around backstage for an hour, but no sight of Guerin. When I did exit with the private escalator, there was still a gauntlet of fans waiting for autographs. I did enjoy the confused "Who the hell is that guy" glares.

Went to the draft but only saw Guerin from afar. The next leg of my vacation was meeting up with a buddy in Pittsburgh so I could scratch PNC Park off my ballpark list. I board the plane and Guerin's sitting first row. The entire Penguins staff was slumming it on Southwest with me.

I knew it was bad form to corner somebody on a plane for an autograph, but eventually I worked up the nerve mid-flight. Guerin was totally cool about it, he even seemed to be admiring the jersey. Chatted him up a bit more at baggage claim.

There is a growing bipartisan movement to label Russia a state sponsor of terrorism. If that happens, it triggers certain provisions in immigration law. Specifically 212(a)(3)(B)(i)(VII) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

--------------------
(i) IN GENERAL.-Any alien who-
(VII) endorses or espouses terrorist activity or persuades others to endorse or espouse terrorist activity or support a terrorist organization;

is inadmissible.
___________________

Provisions (3)(C) and (3)(D) can also trigger entry bans. So any Russian that publicly supports Putin or the invasion can be given an entry ban.

Will they get an entry ban? I don't know. It's on a case by case basis. I am not an immigration lawyer but these laws do potentially apply if Russia is designated a state sponsor of terrorism.
