I kinda feel like the Blackhawks just had their version on the 2015 Bruins first round, and they mortgaged most of their young talent with value to do so. Personal opinion, but I'm just not as high on who they selected (especially where they were selected)

I feel they got poor value in the DeBrincat trade, plain and simple. It seems they wanted to sell him to the team willing to give up the highest first round pick in this draft, because that's what the coveted. They should have been able to do much better.

They got good value in the Dach trade (in a vacuum), although I question trading a 21 year old big body center who had a serious injury that derailed development (along with COVID), and big guys notoriously take longer to develop. Even at this point, I feel Dach has a higher upside than anybody they drafted tonight.

I get the strategy, I just don't think this was the draft to go all in on. So now they bottomed out, traded their prime assets for picks in a poor draft, and will now cross their fingers for ping pong balls. They could have done a lot better

I’m not surprised Wright dropped. I’ve watched quite a few of his games just because I’ve followed Chromiak and never saw him as an undisputed 1OA at any point, long before the rankings started to move. Very good player but in general I just didn’t see it, otherwise it’d be a very weak draft. It’s not that I didn’t see him as a lottery pick player even, just that he was so clearly touted as definitely the 1OA for so long. He’s been on my radar for something like 3 years and always felt he was over hyped.

BTW, it’s not him I’m criticising it’s the experts and the hype train. Wright will almost certainly have a good NHL career.

I think he landed in a great situation too, fortunately for him.

Plus how good did Dach look pre-injury

I do disagree though that Faber would have gone 25 in this draft. I think if hypothetically Faber were available that he would have gone 12-15. So the Kings basically gave up two mid 1st round picks for Fiala. I can live with that, I think it was a great trade for LA and Minnesota.
Personally, the lack of offense (imho) would prevent a team from valuing him that much and give up a 12-15 pick. But it's certainly possible that a team would do that if they liked him enough. But the missing issue here is the sign-ability factor. No team, outside of Minnesota, is giving up a 12-15 pick for him unless it comes with a signing or at least a guarantee from him that he will after next season. But yeah, what you say is fair.

When debating the Fiala deal I think it needs to be mentioned that Faber was unlikely to sign in LA and the Kings would have lost him for nothing anyways.

I wonder if the Flyers picking up another D makes them more likely to move one.

I love the Fiala trade, but I have yet to read anything (except on this board) that lends credibility to this statement.

I agree it's all speculative but allll the evidence adds up to a decent enough theory. Family he wants to be near, refused to sign w/Blake this offseason, gets traded to Minnesota, etc...not a big deal and we got value so so it's not like we were hamstrung which was the worry, so it's just as easy to say it wasn't a factor and rather just a series of coincidences. No harm no foul.

Faber being traded to Minnesota does lend some validity to those beliefs, but on the flip side if that was the only thing preventing him from signing with the Kings then why hasn’t he signed with the Wild yet? As said before, Faber waiting it out would have resulted in him not signing his first ELC until August of 2024, resulting in an ELC running from 2024/2025 season through the 26/27 season. Meaning Faber wouldn’t get that 2nd contract (and a chance at big money) until he was 25 years old. As opposed to signing at the end of this past season with the Kings on an ELC that would have ran from 2021/2022 through 23/24 and the 2nd contract would have started at age 22. Do the math, that is a lot of money to give up on, and dents into potential career earnings too.

Some other possible reasons he didn’t sign.

1. Wanted to win a national championship. The hockey culture up there, especially at the HS and college level is insane.

2. Wanted to finish as much of his education as possible.

3. Had no desire to play in the AHL for 80k and wanted to play in college instead.

It will be interesting to see what ends up happening, but they did lose quite a bit of players to pro and transfer, if he stays at Minnesota instead of signing it probably just means he is really committed to either his education or winning a NC at that level.

I agree with those in full he seems fully committed to college and that's admirable. I don't see why 'both' wouldn't be an option though.

With DeAngelo in Philly for $5M they will be right against the cap. I imagine they deal a JVR before anything else, but now should be when Blake is all over Provorov

Sounds like Edmonton won’t get a cap credit with Keith retiring.
I don't understand why. If they can give the recapture penalty the flip side should work as well.
I forget the sens maple leafs deal that had a guy bought out which lead to a cap credit, but that was permitted. I would be pissed if I was an oiler fan, but I guess they still just gained some space.

There's been rumors about Provorov during the season and his long-term future, but I have a hard time seeing him moving right now, unless we get a similar defenseman back. We just don't have enough defensemen.

Duncan Keith reportedly going to retire

"Due to NHL rules, because Keith is going to retire, the Hawks will endure a recapture penalty for the cap space they saved during the first 11 years of his 13-year contract. They will over north of $7 million over the next two seasons."

Damn I have some Hawks friends are they pretty devastated and depressed the past few days. I get that both our teams won championships in the past decade but it's hard not to see how cra cra Hawks organization is right now.

Makes no sense some of their moves and recent moves in the past year or two.
