I just don't understand what Chicago is doing. You give-up all those assets to get Jones, but you keep the old guys from the cup teams while trading Debrincat and looking to move Dach?

Not saying it wasn’t worth it. I think Faber goes 1st round in a redraft…so essentially 2 firsts for Fiala…

I’m ok with that. Just thought Cat would cost more…
While I agree Faber likely goes in the late 1st in a redraft, there's a big difference between #7 and #19 in terms of the tier of player. There's also the fact that Debrincat will cost more to re-sign, and could walk to UFA status in 2 years if he just takes his $9M QO next season. Blake was able to negotiate a deal with Fiala's camp before ever pulling the trigger, and Fiala is now locked up for likely $1-2M less per year than Debrincat will get.

Fiala cost more than Debrincat did lol.
disagree. What would Faber return draft pick wise? Maybe a late first. Let's say it's Minn #24 pick. Would #19 & #24 get us the #7 pick...maybe. They got that plus #39 and a future 3rd. that's more imo. Not hugely more but more nonetheless.

The Hawks tried to do with Seth Jones what the Kings did with Ilya Kovalchuk, except the Hawks traded away some very good pieces to get him.

Absolutely brutal management over the past year or so in Chicago.

Top tier players change teams every year, for a variety of reasons.

Chicago moved out a third of their roster and win another Cup. Look at the changeover in Pittsburgh's roster between their Cups.

The Kings let every single of the hired guns - the real leadership group - walk, almost all for nothing.

Your theory is nice, just doesn't hold water.

Because Kane, Toews, Crosby, and Malkin were so young when they won their first Cups. They had time to regroup. The Hawks did it on purpose because of a cap crunch, but the Pens were just disappointing after 2009. Kopitar and Doughty were already on their second contracts in 11-12. 3 of the 4 other guys were on their ELC's in 2009 and 2010.

Nothing you said negates my point. Most of the guys the Kings lost were older. Mitchell, Scuderi, Penner, Stoll, Gaborik, etc. Voynov and Richards were lost for nothing due to crime and injury, variables that the Hawks and Pens didn't have to account for with anyone.

Debrincat and Fiala scored the same amount of even-strength goals last year (31), despite the fact that Fiala played 2.5 minutes less per game at ES. Fiala also played 1 less minute on the PP than Debrincat did on average. Fiala outscored him overall at ES by 15 points, and is dead even with him at 179 points scored total over the last three seasons. Finally, Fiala is 3 inches taller and a wizard in transition (a staple of the Kings new system), whereas Debrincat is an excellent player but truly makes his money once a teammate has gotten it into the zone. He'll fit great alongside Stutzle as he did alongside Kane, but I think Fiala fills a bigger need at ES for us while also bringing PP upside in a larger role than he got in Minnesota.

A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Debrincat seems like an easy price to pay and not a bad price. It sounds like an EA NHL price too. Not too many players of his caliber are traded purely for a handful of picks and no other players and prospects.

Fiala basically came with an extension: Debrincat can walk after this season.

Do players want to play in Ottawa? If you are Debrincat, wouldn't you want to just hit UFA and pick your spot?

There is a big difference between 7OA and 19OA but I'd rather have Faber than the extra picks Chicago received. The risk of him walking is a big deal though.

Assessing current value has lots of inputs.. e.g. Faber signability made his value to the Kings more along the lines of 3rd rounder - which made Minne the perfect trading partner... since they didnt have the same risk w him and to them it was like getting 2 1st rounders.

I know math is hard for some folks, but let me help you out here. Getting to 7 with 19 is roughly the equivalent of the 25 pick as per draft pick values. Faber is maybe a late 1st value -- so let's say #25 (which may be a bit generous). That's what we gave up for Fiala. Debrincat got that PLUS #39 and a future 3rd. That's more. Math.

Weak draft, don’t see the separation of picks as that huge…

You really think a team would give up a pick higher than #25 (even in this "weak draft") for Faber?!? An unsigned Faber for that matter who has googly eyes for Minnesota and could stay in college & sign as a FA there in a couple years.
