I love how Smith threw up his arms after he let in the goal from the other blue line. Like he was blaming his teammates for blocking his view of the shot or something. I remember when Quick let in the goal from center ice during the Vancouver series in 2012 and he just seemed to blame himself and then quickly (haha) got over it. Personally, I was worried that his gaffe was going to be the turning point for Vancouver, but it didn't happen. Dude is mentally strong.

Re DS cant argue with results - but I agree w you to some extent. My feeling about the success was that it was led by DL organizational vision and DS fit into the vision at the right time.. with the right players on board. TM had done his job in teaching the new core.. Then DL added Richards and Carter to put them over the top and DS i guess wanted more size and added Nolan and King - which seemed to work out nicely in 2012. But long term i think his style wears people out... but again cant argue with 2 cups. I do think Woodcroft is doing a good job, I noticed he had them winning tight games toward the end of the season preparing for the playoffs. Somethign that Florida didnt do.
I think Daryl Sutter is a bit too idolized on these boards as some perfect coach or human. Terry Murray was an okay coach that taught the team to play defense. I think Sutter gets a lot out of his players for the short term. That’s the extent of his coaching prowess that I see. We had an extremely good team and I think with a decent coach like Sutter they were able to finally show it because they were out of the Terry Murray system that was so stifling. So I think it was the perfect storm but no I definitely do not think Sutter got the Kings to win because of his tactical understanding of the game. He won because he held players accountable. Flames fans will tell you right now how poorly he is coaching and we as Kings fans remember how bad he was when he got fired too.

There’s times when I read this board especially when the flames were doing well when he came in and the obnoxious obfuscation and nostalgia is apparent when people act like the Kings made a mistake putting his tired antics into the dumpster. If anything they should have fired him a season earlier.

I'm surprised players don't practice that kind of shot. Obviously Smith should have stopped it, but there's no harm in trying to short-hop a puck 10 feet from the crease. Those are harder to stop than it looks.

I don't think the puck ever hit the ice until it went into the net. It came in above the cross bar, dropping down into the top corner. He probably did not expect the shot to be lobbed up so high. The shot itself could not have been more perfect. Top corner, launched high enough to blend in against the background, on an unsuspecting goaltender.

Hmm...hard to tell from the two angles lol. From Smith's perspective it seems to come in high but from Andersson's it comes in low.

I love Sutter, but I always felt like the farther the Kings got away from Terry Murray, the looser they got.

It was like TM turned the Kings into a tight structured defensive machine, then Sutter came in and loosed them up just a bit, and it was the perfect combination.

Sutter wasn't part of some grand plan. He was literally on a Canadian farm when DL got desperate because his actual grand plan wasn't working. His big 2011 deadline get still couldn't score here. His cheap UFA winger couldn't stay healthy. His huge C trade wasn't quite making the team better in the standings.

Grand plans usually don't work the way intended though. It was only after the Caps went all in, and git capped out, that they ended up winning in a year when they were expected to take a bit of a step back.

Wow! Goal of the playoffs. Coast to coast for McKinnon
4-3 Avs. The Blues had all the momentum right until then.

And it's a hattrick too.

Jeez, how long is the delay for these telecasts? I just happened to be looking at NHL.com and they showed 4 to 3 aves. I'm also watching the game and thinking wtf? This is before MacKinnon even had the puck.

Those one-timers from the top of the circle are always tough for a goalie.

How exactly is Sutter coaching poorly with the Flames right now? I've watched every one of their playoff games and haven't really noticed anything that screams Sutter is a bad coach.

Also, you seem to be swaying way to far on the other side in putting Sutter down. If Sutter lacks a tactical understanding of the game, how has he been able to have so much success with so many different teams? He had a conference finals run with the Hawks, before leaving because he wanted to spend more time with his kid. Following that he joined the Sharks where he steadily improved the team, eventually winning the division before being fired after losing in the second round. His third stop was Calgary where he led the Flames to a finals appearance, before becoming the GM. With the Kings he won 2 cups and now with the Flames again, he has immediately transformed them into a contender.

He is one of the most successful coaches of his era, not just a "decent coach".

Read the flames board. He’s a decent coach now at best. You don’t remain a good coach all your career. Let’s not forget the opinions when he got hired for LA. Unless you plan on ignoring that as well. Who’s a better coach now, Trotz or Sutter ?
