Not that I want to defend Clarke, but it's not inconceivable that the Flyers had Makar #2.

It's funny since that was one of the years when the lottery was later than usual. In 2016, every Canadian team missed the playoffs so Sportsnet pushed the lottery back until the end of April to entice their audience to watch a second round series they might not care about.

But as a result, the U18s were completed and most junior teams were eliminated from their playoffs. Philadelphia was slotted #13 going into the lottery. I can't imagine they would have used that many resources to watch Patrick that year. They very well may have seen him plenty in 2014-16 when Ivan Provorov was still in Brandon.

But they might have spent more time on Cale Makar that season. Makar was #12 on TSN's midseason ranking, so conceivably a guy in their ballpark draft position.

Unlike Hischier/Patrick who were done playing, Makar had six games after the draft lottery in the Junior A equivalent of the Memorial Cup where he took home MVP.

Very late in the draft process, Corey Pronman said he had sources telling him that New Jersey was considering Makar with the top pick. That was jarring at the time since most of us Devils fans had been picking apart Hischier/Patrick non-stop after the lottery.

I attended the 2017 Draft, so I actually didn't see some of the coverage until today.

Dreger mentioned that Vegas trying hard to move up to #1. It would have been Vegas swapping #6 to #3 with Dallas, then moving #3 to #1. Presumably Vegas would have taken Patrick then New Jersey was fine with Hischier or Makar at #3. Dreger and McKenzie both say that the Devils considered it.

Bobby Clarke with the slash on Kharlamov. Clarke doesn't mind the role of the villain.

Bobby Clarke was the villain of 1972, but was he also Team Canada's MVP? | Edmonton Journal

Team Canada’s Clarke has been blasted by many, including his old linemate Paul Henderson, for his nasty and premeditated slash to the ankle of Soviet star forward Valeri Kharlamov, which effectively took Kharlamov out of the series in Game 6. The slash was bad, but the Soviets weren’t angels it’s worth remembering. For one thing, in Game 5, USSR forward Alexander Malstev tripped up Henderson with a sneaky slash, sending him crashing backwards into the boards. Henderson received a concussion, which in today’s game would likely have kept him out of the rest of the series.

I love the rationalizations that have always followed this around. The Soviets did some sneaky dirty things so Clarke went full two-handed Highlander, saying, "There can be only one!" before breaking his ankle.

...and lest we forget, Kharlamov was one of the top Soviet players in the series. Despite Henderson being the most remembered from his goal scoring in games 7 and 8, no one dominated that series like Phil Esposito. Espo had 7 goals, and 6 assists in 8 games. He was truly remarkable and the Soviets had no answer for his size and skill in the slot.

Wow. Rare to see a public skewering like that among NHL managers. Closest I can think of was the Burke/Lowe feud but they were on different teams, this is a manager talking shit about a former colleague.
Philly hurting in the standings. Fired AV already. GM's big summer moves not panning out. 1st, 2x 2nd, Hagg to dump Ghost & trade for Risto. Giroux may be traded & unsure if he'd re-sign if not. Some NAK dude being loved in Col. They need to do anything to deflect anger from management.

Now, do they re-sign Risto? Could be risky. Do they let him walk?

did they change the font on this board or did my eyes suddenly get worse today?

looks like it's crunched vertically like 10%?

Looking at the standings is so strange, there are some teams that have played 10 or 11 games more than others. The Senators have had 13 games postponed (one game played since December 18th), how do you even begin to make those up? The former Olympic break isn't close to enough, unless you are fine just killing those players who have done nothing wrong

No, they move him at the trade deadline. Fletchers off season moves made the team older and slower. They need to move out JVR, Giroux, Risto, Braun, etc.
Team has been needing a rebuild for years.
Also needs leadership in front office (lacking since Homer was GM) and behind the bench.
Ghost and NAK thriving...

Malkin's first game of the season last night, he and Carter on the same line, both had 2 goals in 4-1 win.

JC now has 20 goals in 43 games with Pens. Jarry has been solid all year and they look to be headed for a long playoff run.

Looks like they’ll need to have double headers like in baseball. “Let’s play two” - Ernie Banks.
