The PP has held them back for years.
Ducks +9 on specialty teams while Kings -5. There's pretty much your entire difference in goal differential between the two teams, and probably most of your difference in record.

This is where I think coaching and system play actually make a big difference during the regular season. The power play and penalty kill can turn a mediocre team into a playoff team.

Yep… and part of the reason the ducks were so bad last year.

-powerplay was historically bad
-Penalty kill was weak due to missed time from silf lindholm and Manson

At a certain point it seemed like gibson just threw up the white flag and stopped trying

we overhauled our assistant coaches which helped our powerplay , and been healthy which helped the pk

Plus how many shorthanded goals have the Kings allowed this season? Probably more than I have seen combined in ages. I hate how casual they are defending their own zone when the PK team puts pressure on them.
The Kings are as of now the league leader in shorthanded goals against with 5. They do get a lot of time on the power play (2nd in the league with 5:42 of power play time per game), but don't score many, and get scored on quite a bit. If there was something the Kings should work on specifically, it's taking better advantage of their man advantage.

This is also tied to their poor shooting percentage overall. They take a lot of shots, but few go in. Same on the power play.

You know what it looks like when the penalty killers on the opposing team has the puck and crosses center ice? The Kings are like: They're just going to dump it in...Hmm they're still carrying the puck into the zone...They're just going to dump it in and peel back...Oh crap they're going to try and score?! Well at least we still have a minute and 30 seconds left on this power-play to try and get that goal back.

I was just going to bring up the 4 games in hand thing too. Once everyone catches up, they'll be middle of the pack again.

They're 13th in pts%, barely out of the top 10. They might be relying on too many non-regulation pts though. 17th in regulation records.

Per Friedman, China authorities impose stiff COVID requirements (and CHina currently spiking in COVID Delta cases)

-if player tests positive for COVID, quarentine 3 to 5 weeks in china, cannot be released without permission of local authorities, if you test positive (symptomatic) must have 2 negative tests after after all symptoms disappear (minimum 21 days )
if non symptomatic, 2 negative tests. And all subject to review of Chinese authorities, so it could change.

NHLPA/players will have 2 virtual meetings this week to ask questions. What happens if a large percentage of players decline to go. But there are rumblings that like Lehner, some players won't want to participate based on those restrictions.

Friedman also mentions the IIHF 5 million dollar fund created to help pay players who miss time post Olympics , (test positive). But what if that fund runs out? Friedman says the NHL says they are clear , the NHLPA disputes that.

Should not have agreed to go, for COVID and other reasons.

human rights issues alone should have had a boycott on games...and not a BS diplomatic boycott

Seriously, who knows WTF is going on in China? No one. The CCP has lied their asses off since the pandemic started. Why trust them to host the Olympics?

This could be a clusterf*ck of epic proportions for the NHL.

i wonder if that is allowed right now. Guess if players follow local restrictions and travel testing they would be

Quite possibly, but we don't know because the Chinese Communist Party never releases accurate information.

Additionally, I doubt NHL players vacationing in Cabo will be required to quarantine for 3-5 weeks at the discretion of the Mexican government.

Except it's much easier to get back to the States from Cabo than it is from China. Don't forget China welded people into their apartments last time Covid got out of control. Anyone going shouldn't be shocked if they get stuck there for a while.

It could possibly be a challenge, you have players from different countries vocalizing. So what happens to those players from say, Russia , who are 100% all in if the NHL opts out. I guess that might violate their contract? There wouldn't be insurance for injury and other complications.

Guys....how the f*** does Strum still have a job?? Our pp has been shit for years.
To me, the crazier thing is that our Pk is bottom 5 in the league. I could see us having a **** PP with the lack of elite forwards, but for us to have such a dismal PK with 2 Selke caliber centers a hof D, and an all-star caliber goalie I find to be bewildering.

The PK structure is abysmal and hasn't changed once this year. They overemphasize covering the bumper but give up literally every other scoring area. Kinda like a triangle down low with a floater up top vaguely covering the points. Not great imo.

Any thoughts on this article?
Hockey Royalty: Should the Kings target Anthony Beauvillier?

Fits the idea of acquiring mid-career players after their ELC but younger than 28. Doesn't make sense cap-wise, though with $4.1 M. Interesting from a WAR perspective. But I don't know anything about the player and the circumstances in the drop in production below expected levels. Any opinions?

Doesn't move the needle. The Kings have to start opening up spots for young guys.
