Dean Lombardi told me a few years before the Kings won the cup that's a main reason they let themselves have a lot of cap space. It's been about 15 years, but to my recollection, he said "You offer sheet our players, we'll offer sheet yours."

If Montreal matches I could see Carolina doing the same thing with Suzuki (next year).
