Around the League Thread | New Year, New Me

Is that what it's like when your team isn't cursed? Overpriced players just agree to terminate their bad contracts and walk away? Must be interesting.

Just crazy that he walked away from about $4m just to get a shot at the cup. Seems worth having on your team for that reason alone.

Its not actually that surprising. He actually doesnt lose that much money.

Him getting sent down to the AHL would kill his NHL career most likely.

He was owed 4.3m this season. He already got paid half of it so about ~2.1m.

His new contract is pro rated at 1.5m. So he will make around 750k for the rest of the season.

So he loses 1.5m this year.

Next year he is only owed 3.6m in salary.

If he just shows that hes not a net negative this season and gets a decent playoff run, he will easily get a contract like 3.5m x 3 or 3x3. Keep in mind, this player has paced at a 45 point pace in the last 3 seasons. Its only this year hes been terrible.

So long term, he wont really lose money.

Philly clears $7 million for next year to take a run at Marner or Rantanen.

Trade away two fungible guys at $7 million, get one back at $1 million.

Love this trade for them. Neither guy they traded is very good and that money was better spent elsewhere.

Those hoper signings for elite wingers are very unlikely to happen.

With that in mind, I don't love this for either team, but I definitely think CGY edged out PHI here.

Are Farabee and Frost (a centre mind you), very good? No. Frost can be a stop gap middle6 C and Farabee can play on a 3rd line at the low end. Normally, that's not very good value for $4m~ AAV projected (Frost) and $5m AAV by 3 years (Farabee). But it can be fair in the current environment if both pick up their play. Now add in the rising cap... Odds are you're paying the same or more in Free Agency for 27+ year olds.

These are decent mid-range bets. CGY wins here, but only slightly so. No one side killed it (assuming PHI was angling for cap space).

Does this team look like they are going to win the Stanley cup anytime soon to you? I would believe that's the end goal for them. Benning doesn't mean shit anymore, could have written his wrongs if they wanted too.

If we don’t make a move soon, we are punting Hughes and any chance of success with him. Maybe not now, but by the time his contract is up he will walk. Because you are right, you just aren’t going far enough, or you’re going too far. Either way you’re definitely warm.

Vegas is scary again.

I think what people are missing in the Calgary and Philadelphia is that the second round pick given up by Calgary is the most valuable asset in the deal. Kuzmenko is a negative value asset, and Farabee, with his current contract and production, can't have much value at all.

I like the deal from both sides in that Calgary takes a shot on two mid twenties forwards who could improve, and Calgary has tons of cap space so can afford to take this risk.

The Flyers clear a bunch of cap for next year, and with the second round pick they acquired from Calgary, can acquire a player that is better than either of Farabee or Frost.

Conroy has done extremely well in trades. Anyone that doesn't see it is pretty blind.

Calgary is going to be a very good team. Craig was an amazingly smart player, but a heart-and-soul one. I was always a big fan of his.

I f***ing hate to say that.
I admit to being a bit biased here, but I wouldn't say Conroy has done extremely well in trades. The Toffoli trade was very good. Zadorov was ok. Lindholm deal I would consider to be good but I think they could have extracted more value if they didn't want a player back in return who can contribute. Hanifin's return I felt was a bit underwhelming. The return will likely be a late 1st round pick this year + 3rd. Don't think Miromanov will amount to much. In comparison, Hronek's return for Detroit was better. Tanev didn't return a 1st round pick and Grushnikov isn't looking too bluechip but time will tell. The Markstrom trade was excellent.

Keep in mind that originally he wanted to re-sign Lindholm and Hanifin instead of rebuilding (ownership pressure of course).

I just don't see Calgary being a very good team. Their best players are aging and Andersson might not re-sign. Where are the building blocks up front especially at C? Previously the Flames had Gaudreau (RIP), Tkachuk, Lindholm, Monahan, and Backlund with Mangiapane, Bennett, and Hathaway rounding out the group as well.

Conroy dealing with clauses didn't help. I don't know how some of their prospects will eventually turn out but currently on a model I view, they have 10 players in their system that have potential star rating over 10%. The Canucks have 1. They will need some better centres in the future but they have a lot of talent coming and pretty much all of that is thanks to Conroy. 2 first's this year, 2 more next year. Plus a ton of cap space.

This is a genuine question, I don't know what that means - potential star rating over 10%. And how significant is having a potential star rating of over 10%? And who are the 10 players if we only have 1? I can't see how the Flames would have 10 and we would only have 1 (I assume our 1 is either Willander or Lekkerimaki?). Do they have 9 players better than Willander or Lekkerimaki? I don't see it.
