Around the League Thread | New Year, New Me

Is that what it's like when your team isn't cursed? Overpriced players just agree to terminate their bad contracts and walk away? Must be interesting.

Just crazy that he walked away from about $4m just to get a shot at the cup. Seems worth having on your team for that reason alone.

Its not actually that surprising. He actually doesnt lose that much money.

Him getting sent down to the AHL would kill his NHL career most likely.

He was owed 4.3m this season. He already got paid half of it so about ~2.1m.

His new contract is pro rated at 1.5m. So he will make around 750k for the rest of the season.

So he loses 1.5m this year.

Next year he is only owed 3.6m in salary.

If he just shows that hes not a net negative this season and gets a decent playoff run, he will easily get a contract like 3.5m x 3 or 3x3. Keep in mind, this player has paced at a 45 point pace in the last 3 seasons. Its only this year hes been terrible.

So long term, he wont really lose money.

Philly clears $7 million for next year to take a run at Marner or Rantanen.

Trade away two fungible guys at $7 million, get one back at $1 million.

Love this trade for them. Neither guy they traded is very good and that money was better spent elsewhere.

Those hoper signings for elite wingers are very unlikely to happen.

With that in mind, I don't love this for either team, but I definitely think CGY edged out PHI here.

Are Farabee and Frost (a centre mind you), very good? No. Frost can be a stop gap middle6 C and Farabee can play on a 3rd line at the low end. Normally, that's not very good value for $4m~ AAV projected (Frost) and $5m AAV by 3 years (Farabee). But it can be fair in the current environment if both pick up their play. Now add in the rising cap... Odds are you're paying the same or more in Free Agency for 27+ year olds.

These are decent mid-range bets. CGY wins here, but only slightly so. No one side killed it (assuming PHI was angling for cap space).

Does this team look like they are going to win the Stanley cup anytime soon to you? I would believe that's the end goal for them. Benning doesn't mean shit anymore, could have written his wrongs if they wanted too.

If we don’t make a move soon, we are punting Hughes and any chance of success with him. Maybe not now, but by the time his contract is up he will walk. Because you are right, you just aren’t going far enough, or you’re going too far. Either way you’re definitely warm.

Vegas is scary again.

I think what people are missing in the Calgary and Philadelphia is that the second round pick given up by Calgary is the most valuable asset in the deal. Kuzmenko is a negative value asset, and Farabee, with his current contract and production, can't have much value at all.

I like the deal from both sides in that Calgary takes a shot on two mid twenties forwards who could improve, and Calgary has tons of cap space so can afford to take this risk.

The Flyers clear a bunch of cap for next year, and with the second round pick they acquired from Calgary, can acquire a player that is better than either of Farabee or Frost.
