Confirmed with Link: [VAN/Pit] Vincent Desharnais, Danton Heinen, Melvin Fernstrom, & 1st (NYR) for Marcus Pettersson (LD) & Drew O'Connor (W)

I mean, how high could Marcus Pettersson actually ask in his next contract? With the cap going up, these numbers are going to either be crazy or be very palatable - and at his calibre, it should be reasonable.

I don't know where to put this, Ill just put it in both Threads. ( Assuming we Sign 3Petey)

Hughes - Willander
3Petey - Hronek
DPetey / Soucy - Myers - Mancini

That's a pretty amazing core of youth and talent honestly.
Need to slowly get rid of Myers and Soucy and find another D to finish it off, but I really love the makeup.
Also you can Play Hronek with Quinn of course and move Willander down.
Till Willander plays, it's Mancini's 3rd pairing rhd to lose.

Some quotes from Rutherford in the Athletic:

“That’s a good question,” Rutherford said about midnight ET. “It’s been a trying season, to say the least. To be honest, we’re in a fight just to make the playoffs right now. But, we are building for the stretch run. And the thing is, we’re also building for the future as well. We’re building moving forward.”

“We had to give up something to get him, but Marcus is one heck of a defenseman,” Rutherford said. “I traded for him when I was in Pittsburgh, and I’m very happy with how that one turned out. I traded Daniel Sprong for him, and I can still remember people saying, ‘How on earth can you trade Daniel Sprong for this guy?’ Well, I’m pretty darn happy with how that worked out. How good did that trade work out? And here we are again. We need an upgrade, and he’s going to give us that. I know that he will.”

“He’s just what we need, in my opinion,” Rutherford said. “You know what he is? He’s just a very, very steady defensive defenseman. You need to have guys like that if you want to win in this league. And he’s one of the really good ones.”

“Talk about a character guy,” Rutherford said. “One of my favorites. We know that we’re getting one heck of a good guy to go along with the fact that he’s one heck of a good hockey player.”

Still feel like these guys get myopia over some players but Pettersson should be a good add.

As a Penguins fan this is why I hate Rutherford despite him getting us two cups.

Dude is a total fraud and totally ego driven. He makes trades and pisses away assets to be right.

This forward group is kind of f***ed, especially with Petey playing like a mediocre 2nd line center for the better part of a year now.

The forward setup worked because there were two 1st line centers, so they could get away with having some non-top 6 wingers playing with them. They either need to magically come up with a high end center or trade for a couple 2nd line forwards.

Also it doesn't help they lost their best faceoff guy by a mile, and are left with one decent faceoff guy (Blueger) and 3 weak faceoff guys (Petey, Suter, Chytil)

They're clearly missing a 2C who can play high-leverage, matchup minutes & a play driving first line winger. Boeser is fine as a complimentary winger, but he's never been a guy who drives a line on his own, which is why I'm not surprised management is being iffy on whether to sign him LT at the suggested prices.

I still have no clue where those pieces are going to come from with the assets they currently have. Would be great if we could flip Chytil, Kudryavtsev, and a 1st next year to find one of those

Jesus christ so many bad, defeatist, victim complex takes in here, surprising honestly.

Keeping Miller until summer was obv not an option.
Keeping the 1st and stockpiling assets for 17 yr olds was never an option.

Adding a top pairing defenseman they're going to sign and alot more speed & rush offense is exactly what was needed, and most have been clamoring for.

The team is unquestionably better now relative to less than eight hours ago, while ditching five million in trash, and still have cap space & assets for additions.
but expiring ufas.

If he wins cups, he can have an ego

The reality is he was the GM here when we won two cups.

Penguins fans are so spoiled, only back to back cups?

I mean good luck with the guy. He's a f***ing ego maniac who basically eliminated every positive aspect of the Penguins management to insulate his own power while here and then got boo boo face and quit.

The calling out players in the media, making trades for guys he used to have, and mismanging assets is the Rutherford playbook. Ask any Canes fan.

I just don't see a scenario in which a contract isn't already in place.

Trading our 1st for a rental with where we are this season would be absolutely bonkers.

Despite how management has bungled this season I just can't see them doing something that stupid.

I just don't see how you can look at our forward group and think it's playoff caliber. But I like your positive outlook on the matter and gonna wait and see how this team performs. I'm just really not thrilled from an early viewpoint.

Depends how Chytil does. If he comes in & plays like a legit 2C then things look alot different. Having Garland will surely help. If he doesn't they are going to have to find someone else which won't be easy.

They don't have the offensive punch but they do have size & jam up front.

Joshua / Sherwood / OConnor / DeBrusk / Boeser / Garland. All these guys can play in the trenches.

I'll defend him and his tenure here in Vancouver. He's brought in a lot of necessary and qualified staff here in Vancouver. I still do believe that management is actually pretty stacked here in Van.

Cole - good
Soucey - mixed
Debrusk - probably good considering cap is going up like crazy
Sherwood - yes
Lankinen - yes
Heinen - ass
Mik - ACL changes things
Kuz - mix
Desharnais- f*** off
Bluegar - good
Suter - good
Kuzmenko was a great UFA signing, it was the followup extension that became the miss.

People are putting waaaaaaaaaay too much value on a 1st pick that will very likely be 16+. New York is only 5 points out of a playoff spot. And it isn't like anyone in the east is pulling away with the wild card spots. Not to mention, this is supposed to be a very weak draft.

That pick was never "very valuable." Especially because we're simply not in a position to be waiting around for prospects to play in 3-5 years. Hughes outright said he's not staying for a rebuild. So unless some of y'all are ready to say goodbye to him, our picks mean nothing but trade fodder.

All of that said, my opinion on this trade hinges on whether we re-sign Pettersson. If we do, he's exactly the player we've lacked this season. While I still think letting Zadorov go was a mistake. I do kind of get way they did. That cannot happen with Pettersson unless he's horrible. Which I doubt he is.

A lot of my opinion on this hinges on what happens over the next 5 weeks. Re-sign Pettersson to a good contract or flip him for solid assets if the team continues to flounder and I think this is a good trade. Getting out of Desharnais and Heinen, who both had term, is a very smart move given how they want to reshape the team.

Going into Sunday, assuming everyone plays, the Canucks should be much better on the back-end but significantly weaker offensively. Ideally, Marcus Pettersson helps bridge that gap and Drew O'Connor can help create more of an identity in the bottom-6.

Pretty much every expert has said he's a #3C.

Even JFresh's card has him labelled as a #3C based on analytics.

I feel like i shouldn't even have to post this but a) its no accident the salary cap news was released and two massive trades a few hours later.
And b) these ppl are not dim or stupid, they know as well as we do what happened to last years ufas, certainly reasonable to think they're not going to repeat that, especially with another swede of perfect fit.
And c) there is zero chance boeser walks for free, zero, percent.

Just chill, have some bc greenery and relax for a few more weeks, everything is going to be okay.
And if chytil can stay healthy, yes big if rn, he's got near ppg potential , ppl are sleeping on his skill level, plus speed and size.

Today was a good day.

You're angry at a guy who brought the franchise 2 cups?

If he does that here he'll get a street named after him.

Not sure about "in place" but I think that they are willing to do whatever it takes to re-sign him.

Rutherford already knows him.

And with the cap going up, they're going to pay him.

It might be an overpayment, but he won't be walking.
