Well if you are elite you should get paid. But as they say, rising tide raises all boats. So up to management to decide who to pay and who to move off. Like Nurse in Edm. And others around the nhl.
Or you just get unlucky like Col and Landy gets hurt but has an unknown return. Nuke, he had some issues prior, but they rolled the dice on a long term deal with him.
One silver lining about our muted start is that there are other Western "contenders" that are struggling hugely out of the gate. It's not like we're 10 points behind EDM/COL two weeks into the season.

i think goalie cap reform is needed but it may take one more round of untenable contracts to get there.
doing it would help the goalies secure term and avoid cap pressure enhanced career death spirals like jack campbell. pretty much no goalie, no matter how good, can live up to a long term deal being paid what they are worth to the team at their best. price and bobrovsky show this. goalies just are not as consistent as skaters and should not be subject to a cap model with contract options that assumes they can be that way. it is much harder for them to contribute at a lower level as their skills fade or they deal with injuries, and it is normal for them to have off years because of injuries and the mental aspect of the position. unfortunately, the fan reaction to the cap implications of those things magnify the pressure that goalies already feel in a lonely position and can make it really hard for them to enjoy the fan appreciation they deserve for their careers.
the nhl seems to be hoping the market will eventually efficiently allow for goalies as a portion of cap but the problem is that when goalies are good they are very valuable to teams and it is hard to rationalize not paying them the same as skaters or refusing them term. until recently i think teams were trying to build in a discount for goalies for the risk but i think that is in the process of swinging the other way. really it is not fair to not pay a superstar goalie accordingly when they are a superstar goalie. the cap is pretty arbitrary.
so i think a goalie salary should include league wide defined performance bonuses that do not count against the cap and allows the goalie to increase his salary by about 2/3 of base. someone like swayman should earn about $5m with the potential to earn another $3.5m if he had a season like last year. that secures him term and hedges for both sides.
another option is to allow teams one no penalty goalie buyout every five years with no cap penalty after that goalie has played a minimum number of games for the team.

Demko definitely has much more pedigree than Swayman though, who isn't particularly "proven".
I think the 8.25M standard is reasonable for Demko, albeit with a shorter term due to injury history.

I don't even see any point in discussing what a Demko extension will look like until we see what his play looks like when he returns.

The Avs gave up 3 breakaways plus leaving guys wide open in the slot, Bruins were tipping pucks right in front of him unimpeded, the Avs aren't even playing defense anymore, Toews was hurt and missed last nights game, and their 3rd pairing is horrible. Same thing with the other 3 games. Sure Georgiev isn't great, but i would say he allowed maybe 3 bad goals so far this season. You can put Hellebuyck back there and he would get lit up as well.
Stone is going to "get hurt" in Feb, the Avs will be out of the race by then and Rantanen will end up in Vegas. Stone will be healthy for G1 in the playoff, maybe G2 at the latest. Its pretty predictable.

Shesh is one that is going to be an interesting contract. Best goalie right now, but how much more valuable is he compared to the others making upwards of $8.5 mill? Does he expect 50% higher? I mean, that would be like McDavid at $12.5 mill and no one else above $9 mill. Which hasn't been the case.
So, how much above the rest can NYR or any club as he's ufa afford to give him? $11 mill would make him the highest aav goalie and would be $1.5 mill more than Vasi and over $2 mill more than the rest of the NHL who are all under $9 mill.

Signing these below average to average starters to term is starting to be the biggest mistake a team can make. So many recent examples like Kuemper, Campbell, Jarry, Korpisalo, etc. I know goaltending can be voodoo. But top goalies bad years they will drop into mid-starter tier and have a much higher likelihood of bouncing back like Bobrovsky and Markstrom. When these lower end guys will not be playing at a starter’s level in a down year or even worse regress. If you don’t have elite goaltending go with the cheapest goaltending possible and find a veteran stop gap with not a lot of term.

If you don't have goaltending what are your options? Can you justify to your fanbase that you either rolled it back or signed cheap guys?
If the teams could get away with 3 year term (ala Husso) vs 5 years, they should do that, even at the cost of a higher aav. Maybe with the cap finally rising they opt for that over handing out term.

Calgary off to a 4-0 start.
If Huberdeau is back in action, they have an above average top six, a quality first pairing, and... not much beyond that. But could be a sleeper playoff pick with lots of room for upgrades with $18m of cap space.
