don't they save actual money the next two years?

They save 1M a year for the next 2 years.
Then they pay 4M more for the next 2 years.
Then pay 2M more for the next 2 years.
At that point Subban's contract is over.
Weber's goes for 4 more years costing a total of 6M for those 4 years.
So they pay 4M more and lose 4 years of total contract time in doing so.

I mean if Nashville can trade their captain while he's fishing in his home town, surely the Kings can trade Brown right... to anyone...

I understand why Edmonton did it, but I don't think they got close to equal value

At this point it doesn't really matter if they got value in Edmonton.
They need help on D. And they got it.
And if they get the D worked out with all the firepower they have up front thanks to so many high draft years they will become very scary.
And this puts them in the right direction for sure.

now add Lucic and Demers to that lineup and you have a playoff caliber team.

Yakupov, Eberle, RNH are all trade pieces although after that Hall trade, they'll probably hang onto Eberle.

Who said anything about elite?

We said Hall is a top 10 lw, not a skater, a lw. Can you name the 10 left wingers who you are so sure of that Hall doesn't fit in with?

You did. There are roughly 120 left wingers in the league. Top ten is elite.

elite def - "a select part of a group that is superior to the rest in terms of ability or qualities."

top 10 doesn't mean elite. It means top 10.

But if you're using that logic, Hall is superior to 110 left wingers imo.

thats your opinion (and its wrong)

The game is played by teams and not players.

In a vacuum, Hall is more talented. No disagreement on that point.

Larsson will have more of an impact for the Oilers, in my "wrong" opinion.

Hall will possibly continue this nice 2012-16 PPG pace. I don't think it is going to mean a damn thing, however.

Larsson will probably put the Oilers in a better position structure wise, I agree.
I didnt say you were wrong because of that^, I said you were wrong for calling Hall not a top 10 LW.the Oilers sacrificed a lot because they are desperate for defense. that doesnt make this a good trade

I didn't say he wasn't a Top 10 LW, just said he is overrated. That sentiment is not a response to someone saying he is a Top 10 LW but more in relation to Larsson.

And all the oil could get for him was "a very good defensemen" with "a promising career". The guy has yet to play a playoff game and has spent his entire career with a trash team and organization. That is why he returned "Larsson". Hall is a good player but his current value is way overrated.

A year ago today, who would've said both Weber and Jones wouldn't be in Nashville 12 months later?

I don't understand why there is so much criticism regarding the Edmonton-NJ trade. Even if Hall is the best left winger in the NHL, the Oilers are loaded with talented forwards, but desperately needed a top 4 defenseman, which are very very hard to find. They needed to make that move, otherwise they would simply repeat past years. Not saying Larsan is Doughty or anything, but he is a solid top 4 defenseman.

With respect to the Subban-Weber trade, makes me think if we could have gotten in on that action. Say Martinez+ for Subban or even Muzzin for Subban. Subban is one of the top 5 defenseman in the league. Although making these trades would not solve our defense problems, we would end up having two of the best defensemen in the league in our lineup. Can't believe they traded Subban for an aging Weber who is on a horrible contract now. Habs could have gotten so much more.

Awhile ago, there was another thread and somebody mentioned how the Oilers should have drafted Larsson over Nugent-Hopkins. And my immediate thought was that the Canadian media would have destroyed Larsson for being slow to develop. Even now, I really hope the local press doesn't affect Larsson's play.

TSN's Travis Yost is killing the trade, but he is citing Larsson's fancy stats over the last three years. I'd argue that you'd need to separate his numbers post-DeBoer. After DeBoer was let go, it was like night and day with Larsson's confidence.

So nashville gets out of what will be a sunk cost of $6M in a couple years for a guy who will still be in his prime.

This makes financial sense for Nashville IMO.

Weber's deal will be Brown bad in 3 years.
