Fingers crossed the NHL's new broadcast partners down south start putting pressure on them to protect the stars like McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon, Panarin, etc. Lord knows ESPN love's talking about NBA star players, they'd probably want the same for the NHL.

Though I'm doubtful any meaningful change will occur as long as guys like Colin Campbell still have power.

The NHL cares more about appealing to its current fans than growing the game for new fans

I mean, the two biggest stars left are goalies

Playoff hockey- where Matt Martin is more valuable than Nathan MacKinnon.

And people wonder why NHL ratings are where they are.

I don't like the NHL or NBA's system. NBA calls BS for stars. NHL calls BS for slow players. I guess calling stars > slow players, but just call the game as is. If you miss something, then don't make it up. And then just have a set standard for what constitutes a slash, trip, hold, cross check, etc. and stick to it. Nobody will complain much if you do that (short of a mistake costing them a playoff game or something).

If we get Habs/Isles, then what does that say about the future of this league?

I don't mind that per say... Better than knowing with an almost 100% probability that Curry or LeBron is in the Finals every year.

They are amazing players, but they are not that amazing. They'd need help from more than just their team.

I watched closely NYI BOS series and from game one,3rd and 4th liner taking runs on Past and McAvoy, commentators quoting coach and stating what a brilliant tactic it is.. Basically the continuation of the same brilliant tactic WAS with Wilson brought ...Wilson might be a pro strategist/tactician after all ...

Rantanen is actually probably a closer comparison to Matthews than Nylander.
That is what I was thinking also because of size, strength and goal scoring ability despite the position difference is the closest match to any of our core 4 to Avs top line players.

We don't have a MacKinnon and we certainly don't have a Landeskog as perhaps Hyman playing on the top line might be a poor mans version of him.

Leafs advantage would come in terms of depth as Leafs core 4 combined over 2 lines > Avs elite top liners.

Matt Martin is not more important than Mack..... but his types of roles are important in playoffs
Correy Perry role is not more important than's Price's.

McDavid sucked during playoffs so did Matthews/Marner

Your best player still has to be your best players. Leafs best players werent and our role players sucked

Let's not lose focus of what's important.

Proect NHL players? what are they going to do let them wear non contact jersies? this is the big league, you get paid like a big leaguer

Toughen up pumpkin. Players like Bobby Clarke, Mahvolich, Richards been doing it for decades now.

These new NHL superstars needs to grow up. that's what they need to do

So you want it to be an NBA style shit fest?

The game needs a bit more stuff called but pushing the stars ala the NBA with their parade to the FT line and super teams is even more boring.

NBA is the worst in game product in America. This year is the only one that is actually relatively even

Also we shouldn't need to get bailed out by the refs in the playoffs. We barely scored on the PP anyways maybe the team should sack up instead of trying to get Daddy stripes to bail them out

The play where matthews is getting mobbed by and jerked around by two defenders after the whistle and Matthews is laughing and looking at the Refs like this a joke I'm not even reacting. is an example of weird unnecessary physicality that hockey players have to endure. If he isn't fighting back and is behind the net, not in the net, why is he being allowed to be physically attacked like that. Reminds me of when Simmonds got a penalty for physically moving the player who was on his ass in Campbell's crease. Simmonds had good reason to physically move the guy from the crease ...but he got a penalty for it.

why the **** do I watch this sport when there's guys that can decide outcomes as they see fit

Well, hard for Vegas to take penalties when they had the puck for all of games 3 and 4.

And since that quote, Vegas took 2 fewer penalties than the Avs, so it wasn't one-sided. They weren't good in game 1 and period 1 of game 2. Then they took over the series.

Odd that that rough stuff never stopped Lemiuex, Yzerman, Fedorov, Crosby and Malkin from playing their best hockey

In fact they thrived on it. They welcomed the challenged

There's nothing wrong with those plays. That's what you are supposed to take out big ticket players, get under the skin.

matthews needed to his big boys pants on, grow some balls and fight through

I mean Karlsson, Barzal, Kucherov get their shares and they are still playing and producing

Our boys are soft and gutless. Don't bail them out by making excuses for them

Even Paul kariya made the cup...

If we get Habs/Isles, then what does that say about the future of this league?

It says that the teams that can make the Cup finals aren't always predictable like every other major sports league. I think that says a lot of good for the league. Stop crying. This is like your 2nd or 3rd day in a row crying about the dumbest stuff ever. Go watch golf or something or figure skating since that's what you want the NHL to be.

I personally prefer balance, but if it means a 4th line grinder is more important then a superstar, then no thanks.

I mean, I don't think there's any 4th line grinders in this league that are more valuable than a superstar. But having said that, if a superstar can get shut down by a 4th line grinder then maybe they really aren't a superstar.

There has to be a balance though. This applies less to Marner and Matthews because I didn’t think non-calls really factored into their poor play, but it certainly did with McDavid. Guy was getting stopped by far inferior players because they were allowed to hook, slash, and hold him all day every day. If the only way to stop a player is relying on the refs to call absolutely nothing in the rule book then something is wrong with the sport.

I believe McDavid hasn't drawn a penalty in his last 8 playoff games...it's ridiculous...the Jets were mugging and holding him, doing everything they could to slow him down, but the refs just swallowed their whistles.
