If Calgary really goes in the shitter this year and they consider a rebuild their defensemen options are extremely intriguing. Zadorov is an obvious one but he’s a UFA at seasons end and we could run into the same issue we had with Lyubushkin and Schenn where we traded for a gritty defenseman on an expiring contract only to watch him cash in with the Leafs bump and walk away at the end of the year. Tanev is in the same position as Zadorov, but he shoots right and plays higher in the lineup but is older.

Weegar I think would be perfect. Right shot, plays and excels in tough competition, is signed long term and is young enough to still be good with this new four/five year window with Matthews’ new contract. His cap hit would be harder to fit though. And yeah I get he literacy just signed there long term but if the vibes continue to deteriorate and they signal rebuild I could see him wanting out and coming to a contender.

Andersson would also be a good option. Signed for two years after this one and with a more manageable cap hit than Weegar. The only guy I’d avoid like the plague from Calgary is Hanifin.

You wonder if Calgary will be completely dismantled at some point in the season, and if Treliving will be in a position to attend the yard sale.

RIP Adam Johnson

Just terrible news to hear that happen to a hockey player :(
That's tragic to see someone die on the ice, and traumatizing for those involved (teammates, opponents, fans in the stands and viewers).

I don't know if a neck guard would have saved him, but at least that would perhaps have provided some protection against this type of outcome. Never understood the bravado against wearing equipment that protects the players, however rare an injury may occur -- neck guards, visors, etc. One incident like this is one too many.

Calgary should be dismantled, but I don't think it's an accident that none of Winnipeg, Vancouver or Calgary have been keen on rebuilding. I think they all know that their attendance numbers will suffer greatly through a rebuild.

I have always been a fan of Tanev's game and thought he would be a perfect fit to play with Rielly.

I think *they think their attendance numbers will suffer greatly but a youth movement is 100% better and more marketable than a moribund veteran non playoff disaster the fans hate. But of course a billionaire owner is going to know better.
