Who'd have thought Montreal and Vancouver would be the other Canadian teams not a tire fire by the end of October?

I've been impressed with how Tocchet has the Canucks playing. They seem so much more engaged and hard working. They have a lot of speed upfront. Their depth is pretty iffy, especially defensively, but when you have a goaltender like Demko that helps a lot.

And DeSmith has been surprisingly good as well! Having a reliable tandem makes a huge difference.

They need to unload Garland so they can resign Bear.

They look impressive so far. Petey looks like hr jumped up a level.

Dubas should have taken a year and then surveyed the land next spring/summer.
Their core players are in their final few years as legitimate star players, and this could be their last shot, with Guentzel a pending UFA. There was no time to throw away a year "surveying the landscape". That was never an option, regardless of who was in charge.

I meant that Dubas should have taken a year off and signed elsewhere next spring/summer.

Not sure why anybody would turn down tens of millions of dollars and a promotion for no reason.
He would have had that next year as well and had mentioned it was the Leafs or nothing for this season.

I just feel like he could have been in a better spot (better chance to win over the long run) had he bided his time.

Pens are going to be in a world of hurt very soon with little to nothing coming from their pipeline.

Yeah realistically, pens are looking at 5+ (probably closer to 10) years until they can be legit contenders again. Need to wait out this year plus 2 more for the core to finish, then need to start stripping it down and doing a re-build which can last for who knows how long.

I get why he took it, but its going to be a long time before theyre serious threats. Man isnt a miracle worker like some people try to make him out to be.

They've had an extremely easy schedule to start too. 6/8 games have been against teams that didnt make the playoffs last year.

The Leafs or nothing was essentially GMing or not. As in he wouldn't choose to leave the Leafs if he was going to continue GMing.
He chose to keep GMing, but then Shanahan had a bad dream and screwed around and the Leafs were no longer an option for him.

Dubas obviously could have waited, and would be highly sought after the next year, but there's never any guarantees about what positions will be open in any given year.
Pittsburgh will be in for a rebuild pretty soon, but he gets to oversee the twilight years of the best player of the previous generation, and set up the next generation, under ownership that values what he brings. The irrational harassment he got from the rabid fanbase here obviously impacted him and his family, so maybe he'd prefer overseeing a rebuild in a quieter market this time.

And organizationally, there are a lot worse places to end up than Pittsburgh. He was offered a raise, significant job security, and a promotion. I don't know why anybody would turn that down. Usually when people take time, it's because either nobody wants them, or they are still being paid by the previous team and new teams don't want to pick up the tab. Neither apply here.
