You can't take standings too seriously until 15-20 games (unless you're Oilers bad).
Agreed. Leafs started the '21-'22 season going 4-4-1 in October and also the '22-'23 season going 4-4-2 in October again before rounding into form in November and being a top team rest of the way.

Van just dominated that period.

1-0 lead to show for it could be costly

LOL Haula was staring at the empty net for the hat trick but his stick broke

Vanecek allowed a pretty bad goal in the third to keep the Sabres in it. Have to think the Devils will try to land a goalie by the deadline.
They should, but I'm not sure they will. Teams don't trade for goalies the way they used to. For instance, who could Jersey acquire that would be appreciably better than what they have? None of the top goalies will be available, so whoever they get is going to be a middle of the road guy. Lindy Ruff has to get them to play a better defensive system, but I'm not sure they have the players for it. They are the Leafs of 4 or 5 years ago. All speed and offense. That doesn't always work in the playoffs.

A lot of the Flames issues were ownership-driven. Keeping Darryl Sutter too long, trying to compete despite losing Gaudreau and Tkachuk wanting out of town...
Keep in mind too they have to pay the 'Calgary tax'. Outside of Toronto, Vancouver and maybe Montreal, the remaining Canadian cities are not particularly attractive to a lot of NHL players and they have to often overpay to retain guys. Alberta is a tough sell and on top of that the Flames also have archaic facilities that are quite frankly embarrassing for NHLers to be using.

NHL: Plasters boards with sports gambling ads.

Also the NHL: Suspends player for half a season for sports gambling.

Just understand this. NHL thinks sports gambling for its employees is bad for both the employee and the league. NHL also doesn't give a toss about you, you can become a degenerate addicted gambler for all they care.
I would say more than that, they just made it clear that they care WAY more about the perception of you doing something (that they force you to promote) than they do player safety (and I am not talking you becoming an addict, I am talking you dying or becoming disabled for life).

You can't have people involved in the NHL, betting on NHL related things. Its a massive conflict of interest and can be like insider trading. I hate betting, but this is just how it works. Just like how its illegal to warn others about a potential stock share crash because you have inside knowledge that the public is yet privy too.

If players are allowed to discuss that kind of information then it just undermines the integrity of the betting sites.

Betting is stupid, but thats the world we live in.

Not saying you can but imagine a world where your employer puts you in a position to basically promote something , punishes you harshly for potentially perception, yet does next to nothing for your personal safety? The common connection on both sides is your employer profiting off gambling as well as profiting off not taking your safety seriously while taking great strides to make sure things look good. It’s greasy. Very greasy.
