They got back a high 3rd and a 7th too, which largely counters out the 2nd round pick. So they essentially paid a 1st and some contract dumps. Which is obviously not dooming their future, but people sure do like to exaggerate when it comes to Pittsburgh ever since... Oh, around June 1st 2023... For no particular reason of course.

Just a soon as I discover Buffalo was in the WC race, they decide to go out blow their chances out of the water. Typical.
 
I’m not sure why the Pens aren’t looking inwards rather than upwards.
They should be right in that mix.

This isn’t exactly accurate.
This is a 11-14 ish pick or an unprotected 1st in 2025. With a 34 year old Karl son 37 year old Crosby and no guentzel.

There is a fairly reasonable chance that they are bottom 10 next year.

There may not be much difference between San Jose and pitts next year. What 5-7 spots?

It’s not dooming their future. But dubas bets did not work in Pitt this year and he is fairly locked in next year with an aging core

An aging core was locked in before he got there. The owners didn't want to throw in the towel yet, so they invested an asset to dump some contracts and get back a player that could help them go for it, didn't cost too much, and could be used to recoup assets when it's time for the rebuild. The season hasn't developed as they'd probably hoped for a number of reasons, and they ended up selling, but not the end of the world some desperately want it to be.
 
The Alex Nylander thing is a bit funny.

They kept him as a luring piece for Willy in free agency, then flipped him when Willy resigned here, and now he's ripping it up.

Good for CBJ and Alex.

Nylander showed some nice progress in his offensive totals with Pittsburgh in the minors, but didn't seem to get much of an opportunity on the big club .. now on a bad Columbus team he's able to get legit top 9 minutes and room to make mistakes.

Dubas has this knack for giving players opportunities elsewhere and them doing well with them. Wonder if this gets Alex to stick in the NHL.

He's already 26

I don’t disagree with that. Karlson wasn’t what they needed but the major core was already there no question. The pens are clearly on the downswing. That part isn’t his fault.

The thing is
1.) he brought in a bunch of pieces smith/eller/karlson/graves that did not work.
2.) he gave up a 11-14 pick this year if they pick it up. More likely he gave up a top 8 pick this year or an unprotected 2025 pick with
His core being 37 plus

There is a good chance he gave up a lottery pick. Not just “a first”
