He wasn't getting that money and title anywhere else in the near future. He'd be a fool to turn it down IMO. Even if he gets fired in a few years, he'll get another gig.
I guess this is why another poster said Dubas has entered the realm of indifference now.

When I look at the Pens post-crosby and post-malkin....these guys are light years away from being serious contenders again. Dubas gets to enjoy his pay day and disappear behind a lengthy rebuild.

His only stress the next few seasons is worrying about sucking enough to draft some superstars and then wait 4-7 years for the entire roster to form. Realistically we're looking at 10+ years for another pens cup.

The Dubas era is over. He will be considered and return as one of the league's old dinosaur GMs by the time he ever wins a Cup. That's actually ironic on many levels (relative to all the debates that have went down throughout the years).

Pens can take over the league in 3-5 years tops if Dubas had the courage to collect the large hauls for crosby malkin and letang

It has nothing to do with courage.

FSG brought him in to build around that aging core. Unless they give him the green light to sell off the core, there is nothing he can do.
It's hard to believe that everyone doesn't take this as a given. If Crosby, Letang and Malkin don't want to move, and I assume they don't, then that's the end of it. There is a reason Dubas got a 7 year contract. Everyone knows the first 3 or 4 years of it are going to be riding out those careers. Then the real work will start. But, honestly, who cares? The Leafs have the next 4 or 5 years to have the exact same success Pittsburgh had.

I always said that while alive, I would never see the Caps and Leafs win a Cup. We are half way there.

I would take a single Leafs Cup win during their window and call it a day. Anything beyond that is gravy.
They will get one. Teams with this kind of talent almost always win at some point. Yes, there is the odd San Jose or Ottawa, but I would argue neither of those teams had close to the same talent as this version of the Leafs does.

I can't think of a team that's in a worst spot over the next few years than the Penguins.

The core guys have all been healthy and they've gotten the 2nd best goaltending in the league and the upside ended up being.... An average team at best.

It'll be a mistake to try to squeeze another run out of that core, but I sincerely hope they try so I can lmao at Dubas in the meantime.
The Pens is the Canucks in the Sedins later years. The only diff is Canucks GM signed Erickson as a UFA while Dubas traded for EK to try to extend their window.

Except Pens won 3 cups. I liken them to the NYI who did not move off their core after winning 4 cups and became a bottom feeder for decades.

He’s a great player, but I’d like to see these guys stop screwing over the team because I’m certain the Leafs will keep overpaying these guys, maybe Shanahan is getting a kickback for all these overpayments…….
Maybe MM will surprise. He is making alot of money with these commercials he is doing. Give him another gig or two along the way. No way he gets these plum gigs with another team. 11.5 M plus a few commercials gives him say more than Petey. Sell him on this point and his supposed love to be a Leaf

Need to see what he does in the playoffs before deciding what to do with Mitch. If we bow out in round 1 to Boston, and Mitch performs poorly, how can you justify paying him $11.5m, and/or running it back again? That would be true insanity.

Tone, I see no scenario where the Leafs walk away from MM......rightly or wrongly.

Agreed and once you gave Willie 11.5m, you set the table for Marner to get a higher AAV. It is why they will never win with this core IMO. Management is afraid of making the tough decisions. Dubas pretty much has the same problem in Pittsburgh except their core won them 3 Cups so one can see why they remain loyal to them to a fault.

That’s pretty much it.
The MGT at MLSE is too afraid to make the tough decision and take calculated gamble as they are too afraid to lose. Kind of like politicians, instead of making the tough decision, they are just doubling, tripling down hoping it will work out with time.
Like I said earlier, overpaying them 500k-1mil means nothing unless they are close to Cup and that extra money can help get a better player in the 10th or 11th forward. And if they still can’t make it far and it won’t be bc of supporting cast it will be bc we betted on the wrong horses.

Maybe once Jt, Sammy,Bert and Domi are gone they will be in a better place to redistribute the Money
Woll and whoever in net will end up costing more than Sammy and Woll in two years.
JT, Bert and Domi can be distributed better as I don’t think JT is a 11mil player despite his great game last night and Bert is not a 5.5mil player.

I highly doubt marner takes less than $12mm.
But will be surprised if he goes full term for fear Matthews hits a homerun in 28-29.

Leafs have proven they can pick off somewhat marginal players FA and make players out of them. Except for maybe RD(go bigger here) keep buying out of the bargain bin.

I think Drai will set the market for MM.
Would be interesting if Drai takes a discount which I doubt. He will most likely be the 2nd player in the league to sign a 13mil/yr contract.
MM will sign the McD deal. But just make it quick instead of dragging on.

I don't see draisitl taking any discount. It will be $13+ for him.
