*sigh* It sure would have been nice to keep Hyman around on the Leafs
This isn't the player we had though. Hyman's the most improved player in the NHL ainec, the difference in his shot and puck skills are night and day. He also gets to play his strong side in EDM which he wasn't afforded here. Not to diminish his season, but he's not producing these numbers if he's still a Leaf and we all know why.

It's telling when players play better everywhere else.

Hyman is exactly what the team could use and has needed.

But realistically, he's not having the same success anywhere else in the league besides Edmonton. Don't think anyone else would be able to make him the player he is now besides McDavid. He found his perfect landing spot, and it's worked out great for both parties.

There are quite a few reasons as to why.

First and foremost, he plays with the best setup man in the game.

I wonder if he would be on the Leafs #1 PP unit instead of Tavares?

Unlikely. Even feeding off McDavid, he's been worse on the PP.
He's certainly benefited from finally learning how to lift the puck off the ice when he shoots though.

Never a good word to say about any ex-Leafs. He's got 40 goals and will surely hit 50+. Wake me up when a Leaf not named Matthews does it.

Better yet, maybe Hymie can teach some Leafs what he's learned and they can lift the puck too.

Some play better, some are worse...some about the same... but people only remember those who were better.

Great generic response.

Feel free to elaborate on the list of players elevating their game after arriving in Toronto. The list of players that start sucking shortly after their arrival is basically every 1st pick we trade away under Dubas. The list of players having the best year of their life the moment they leave is basically every player we traded away.

But sure, some play better some play worse.. Nothing wrong with culture here

For sure, Engvall, Mikheyev, Johnsson, Kapanen, Holl, ZAR, Ceci, Zaitsev, Douglas, Acciari, Campbell, Dermott, Kerfoot, Lyubushkin, Ritchie, Galchenyuk... are all guys who went on to greatness.

Then you have guys like Benoit, Bunting, Hyman... who came here and performed far better than they had elsewhere. Brodie, Muzzin, Giordano excelled for a time.

Your narrative is so blinded it's ridiculous. Every team has players that got away, and ended up being better elsewhere, and players who ended up being not much.

this one hurts the most

Still could've used a Muzzin.

I often have good words to say about ex-Leafs. I just don't exaggerate and ignore context. Wake me up when we have McDavid, and I'll show you a Leaf not named Matthews doing it. Hyman is a good player, and the progress he's made on his shot at such an old age is rare and impressive. He turned a weakness into a strength, and it allows him to really capitalize on the great situation he's found himself in. I'm happy for him. Doesn't change that the Leafs had good reason to move on, and 3 years later, fans should do the same.

ROFL

Just take the second pair of homer glasses off. Even you can see these two lists are disproportional .

Not to mention guys who came here and performed far better? Hyman? You out of your mind?He was 40 point guy here, scored 83 in Edmonton and yet it's the best you can do on the list of players doing well here . Pathetic.

Hey I'm not even touching Giordano who excelled for two-game strech? Yet you have to praise him, compare to the rest .

Hyman :D oh boy are we reaching

Not to mention there is a whole another group of players - those who played well and their career died here. Like Foligno we paid 1st for etc you smartly omitted all together.

Assuming Buffalo misses playoffs and Jeff Skinner stays healthy he will hit 1000 career regular season games without a single playoff game (14 years) on April 2. #999 will be vs the Leafs March 30th
This is actually insane to think about. You see in NFL and MLB plenty of guys with long careers who don't get to play in the post-season, but that's because of a more limited playoff format where so few teams get to make it and also in the case of the NFL guys have shorter careers on average.

But in the NHL where there is lots of parity and random teams make it to the playoffs all the time? That's impressively sad. Dude's almost a modern day Olli Jokinen. Some shitty luck too leaving the Canes right when they became a playoff team lol
