He’s good. I don’t know if they’ll win the East this year but they’ll be a contender in a year or two.
You see the changing of the guard from Boston and TB to these good young teams -NJD, Buffalo, Ottawa . The NHL needs Detroit and Philly to step up their game.
Devils still need a legit goalie IMO.

I kind of like that Ott/Det might be good this year.

Leafs can't be in complacement mode all year.

Both are fast with good depth. It will be hard for sure. Neither of them employ dead weight players on their lower lines.

Tell me again why I am supposed to be impressed with Ottawa? It's same old, same old. None of Ottawa, Detroit or Buffalo are going to be any threat this season. One (or maybe even two) of them may take a wild card spot, but they will be guaranteed first round exits.

League parity in the new NHL. I'm guessing other team fans view the Leafs in the same way.

"Just get in the playoffs" seems to be the new way of thinking in today's game.

I think the gulf between Toronto and Ottawa, Detroit and Buffalo is still pretty wide. Tampa is now also in the latter group, with Florida and Boston somewhere between those two groups.

Florida is the living proof of that. Would be nice if the NHL rewarded top teams in a significant way for you know - being exceptional for 82 games. Like 5 and 2 home split. Last 3 games in a series gets played at home of the better team

anyway - parade plans in Ottawa just temporarily suffer a set back - they'll be back at it next week

Their seasons will be considered a success if they make the playoffs, regardless of what happens in the first round.

I think it comes down to goaltending. They're all defensive tire fires and Ottawa likely has the best goalie, although he hasn't looked great in half of the games so far.

People get overly excited (positively and negatively) for the first few games every season.

Let's see if Ottawa is still challenging for a playoff spot by December before anyone should get excited

I think they will definitely hang around a wild card spot (everyone in the place should be fired if they don't), but I don't see a real threat there. They made a big mistake with goaltending in the off-season, and I think it will come back to bite them this year. Very similar to Campbell in Edmonton. The wrong guy, and too many years and dollars on that contract. Having said that, they have otherwise done a pretty good job of locking up their best players to long-term contracts. In a market like Ottawa, that is critical.

Leafs struggling a bit to start the year

Pens also struggling to start the year

Teams have been pretty similar since 2018 with 1 series round win and a bunch of 1st round chokes

Wonder how the pens go this year. Dubas got 7 years so missing the playoffs probably doesnt cost him his job yet but its a bad look for sure after going hard to contend

I don't think Pittsburgh will make the playoffs this season. There are too many stronger teams.

The metro isn’t the strongest division. Anything is possible. After New Jersey and Carolina it’s really a crapshoot
