Capitals are going to be a bad team for a while. I’m sure fans are okay with that. Got a Stanley cup and saw the greatest goal scorer play his career there.
Trying to get Ovechkin the record is understandable but probably the wrong approach.

Hopefully, not a harbinger ... Leafs - Matthews.
I'd take a Cup to be in the Caps spot now.

I think their mistake was offering up "back pay" contracts to guys like Backstrom and Oshie. Carberry might also be in over his head too. Time will tell but I don't see any motivation at all right now from the top players.

I understand that would be the case for probably everyone who hasn't seen a Cup.

And yes, a modern era Cup would be wonderful.

But to me that would be a huge disappointment for this version of the team.

Over 30 teams in a league that’s parity driven .. I take the high of winning that 1 cup and never look back.

I mean, this version of the Leafs is into their prime and only a few years from seeing Matthews/Marner/Nylander enter the decline phase of their careers and they haven't managed 6 wins in a Playoffs yet, let alone 16. Not to mention Nylander may very well be gone by next year

Maybe 5 years ago that stance makes sense, but at this point regardless of how much you believe in this group, a Cup win and some good regular seasons over the next few years, followed by a decline into mediocrity seems like an absolute best case scenario.

I'm not saying I expect anything, I'm saying this has been a very disappointing team based on the talent it has.

Matthews - Hart - LIndsey
marner - Selke candidate
Tavares - career PPG

Boston has won all 3 of its games so far. Curious to see how they look against a team that's actually good.

They have a pretty soft schedule to open the season.

I wonder if a team (us) could vulture a John Carlson from them? 2 more years past this one at $8 million.

Jack Hughes is so good. That contract is criminal. Legit the new mackinnon contract. Will be a top 5 player in the league by the end of the year.
I think he may already be a top 5 offensive player in the league. Probably will be a Hart trophy finalist a few times in his career. That whole damn family is going to dominate the NHL for years.

Agreed. In terms of just offensive impact, I think he can become the 2nd best as early as this year. I'm super high on Jack Hughes. I've owned him in a dynasty league since he was drafted so have followed him very closely. He just makes everything look so easy. The skating, puck handling, passing, shooting, you name it (except faceoffs :P), he makes it look effortless at an elite level.

He’s good. I don’t know if they’ll win the East this year but they’ll be a contender in a year or two.
You see the changing of the guard from Boston and TB to these good young teams -NJD, Buffalo, Ottawa . The NHL needs Detroit and Philly to step up their game.
