Huberdeau was paid $5.9 million this season before his eight-year, $10.5 million AAV extension kicks in (with a NMC).

Nazem Kadri signed a 7 year, $49,000,000 contract with the Calgary Flames on Aug. 18, 2022. The contract has a cap hit of $7,000,000. Also a NMC.

I know I'm likely reading too much into his comments, but Wagner just seemed like he was frequently stuck in his own head. So many scoring chances and it just would just fall short.
agreed, i thought he had some physicality to his game that liked.

I think Brad T is one of the better GMs out there. Not sure what any GM can do with the leafs current roster as it is pretty locked in.

Same thing if Dubas gets the Pens job. Really what can he do?

We often can't predict it, because we don't often know or understand which team is better until the series is played. That's why they play the games.

What defines the better team? It is the team that wins the 7-game series. The team that wins proves it over the course of seven games, or by getting to four wins in the series first.

The little things you mentioned that are magnified in the playoffs are the very things smart GMs are looking for when they build championship teams.
This is kind of a weird philosophy to me. You say that smart GMs look for certain things to build championship teams. That implies that championship teams can be built and that a smart GM can predict the types of players that will result in winning in the playoffs. But you also say that we can't predict what makes a better team because the better team is the team that won the series. So a smart GM can determine what makes a championship team but that team cannot be determined until the end of a series? What would be the point of trying to build a championship team if the championship team cannot be defined until the end of the season?

It's kind of a circular argument to me.

All GMs try to build teams that give them a better chance to get to the playoffs and win in the playoffs. There's no sure thing in hockey, so everything a GM does is trying to predict what players will help the team be better than other teams. The idea that a GM can know ahead of time that any one player will be the difference maker is a fallacy to me. That's why they play the games.

The better team is the team that has a better chance of winning a seven game series. Sometimes better teams don't win because breaks here and there. Sometimes hit on a 13 in blackjack and bust, and sometimes you don't.

Whatever. It's all just semantics.

LOL don't try to apply logic to that kind of thinking......

Basically he's saying Florida is a better team than Boston......because they won.

Seattle is a better team that Colorado, because they won.....

But then will go on to say Colorado built a championship team the right way.......etc

Nashville has a lot of picks. In part due to Tampa making one of dumbest trades ever seen in the cap era.

Makes sense to take some swings when you have 12 picks in 5 rounds.

Trotz was a fantastic coach. It will be interesting to see if he makes a good GM.

It's not semantics, but you believe what you like. Blake has built a flawed roster and the wheels are going to fall off the instant Kopitar and Doughty can no longer play 23 and 30 minutes a night.

...but, "muh 100 points", so they must be good!

If I was Dubas, I would not have taken the Pittsburgh job.

He'll basically be presiding over the fall of the Roman Empire. No where to go but down.

Crosby & Letang will be 36. Malkin 37. Empty prospect pool.

For it to have a chance to work Dubas will need to be given authority to not only keep it on life support for another year or two, but then also to tear it down to the studs. Rather than be fired for not (somehow) making lemonade out of shit, and handing the rebuild to the next guy.

Dubas to Pittsburgh.

Would’ve loved to see a young GM like him in LA. Instead we get Silent Rob and the rest of the short bus.
The SDP guys were drooling over the prospect of someone like Carolina’s AGM to take over the Leafs. He’s apparently another young analytics guy who, based on their moves, is no dummy.

Maybe the stars will line up in a year or two and we can get lucky with him.

I don't get the ageism.

It doesn't matter to me if a guy is young or old.

The main guy responsible for the Leafs turnaround was probably old man Shanahan.

Depends on how you view it, if you take it as a challenge, look I can take this once proud regime, and rebirth them like a Phoenix, into what it once was, man, what kind of legacy is that, there are only a handful of GMs in the league history that can say they've done something like that....

This isn't a knock on Dubas at all, but I thought he had some concerns about his mental health. I just don't think it's a good idea to take a team that needs to rebuild soon and will undoubtedly have some rough years if his mental health has taken a toll. I thought taking a break for even a season might be beneficial.

Fair enough...I didn't read enough into his departure at all....and it's in my face every day lol, I just don't really care about the specifics...but yea, you definitely want him making the best choice for him and family and health etc

crosby is the secret gm. hextall gave big BOY malkin a sweet new contract because sid wanted to try to win another cup with those 3.
Dubas is the sacrificial gm.

I'd say that escalated rather quickly.

I see that as totally normal. Dubas will want to bring in his own team of professionals.

Those are Hextall hires. They will go somewheee else.

If Blake/Luc got replaced by Dubas I strongly feel we would have the same purge.

Yeah, but apparently Lombardi was the last time the org decided to go with someone completely removed from the organization in a major role.
