As it's been repeated a million times by many on here, you put players (especially elite talented ones) in a position to succeed next to other talented players from day one. Getting two #1 picks, then finding a few guys like Mercer in the later rounds really helped. Not sure giving up 2 first for Mier was smart for a team thats not reached contender status as measured around here.

NJ is absolutely a contender, or at least right on the cusp of contending. Their young core will get better just by virtue of getting older and gaining experience.

Which elite talented players are on the Kings right now, outside of Byfield [ still in progress] aren't getting their shot? Knies a late 2nd round pick, has 3 NHL games under his belt, and 1 whopping point . He has 3 assist in 7 playoff games. This is not an elite player.

I can see them contending, but not yet, more a cusp team like you said. Having 2 top #1 picks helped too. They advanced because the Rangers suck. LAF, 0 points and Kakko 1 goal 1 assist.
