I don't think this would do much asides from make fans hate refs more .. game management is too prevalent in the NHL so you'd get a lot of canned responses.

At minimum it would at least open the league up to scrutiny if the canned responses didn't match up on similar calls. Also gives the media an excuse to further discuss plays that may have been otherwise ignored post game

I'll take anything that eventually helps to push the league away from game management at this point, no matter how graduak.

Pointless indeed.

"Hey ref, why'd you miss that call"

"Cause I didn't see it, sorry"

....

What exactly is supposed to come out of that? Refs basically have plausible deniability for every bad and missed call .
That still serves a purpose though, IMO. Ding them for each missed call, and that will allow the best ones with the fewest misses get the playoff assignments.

Accountability is still there, and the best ones will officiate the most important games..

It would no doubt bring more attention to the horrible issues of reffing

Unfortunately refs are still a glorified goon group who has the full backing of the league.

I think Ottawa just crippled Buffalo and Detroit's negotiating position with Dahlin and Seider respectively. If a pre-breakout Sanderson is worth $8 million, Dahlin is a $10 million man easily on breakout and additional potential. Seider would be sliding under that but easily north of $9 million.

This is what Dubas was hoping he’d do to the market (granted the Leafs 3 actually produced at a high clip). But other GM’s didn’t cave.

The kid's been in the league a year, and he gets $64M? Hopefully this turns out better than the Chabot deal.

It should. Hes a much better all around player. If his offence doesnt completely pop as he gets older (I think he can become a 60 point guy kinda like McAvoy), at least hes already a stud defensively.

It's probably going to turn out well because of the rising cap and his potential, but that's a whole lot of money for a guy after one season that wasn't really that special in any way.

Sens continue their strategy of locking guys up long term before they breakout. Pretty risky but worked with Stuzle so far

Sens fans seem to be celebrating this move but I think it might also be the price of doing business in Ottawa. Back the Brinks truck up early and don’t even give these kids the time to breakout and start eyeballing an exit. Not saying everyone wants to leave Ottawa but they probably want to avoid letting a Stutzle and Sanderson get to the end of their ELC’s, have the hockey world hyping them up and then have other teams start sniffing around.

It's worth it tbh. Especially with Stutzle and Sanderson. With cap rising and knowing players are gonna be getting crazy amounts of money the next 2-3 years it's safer to give them the long term contract at a cap hit they'd probably get putting up 50-60 points in a few years. Look at Hughes in New Jersey. They locked him up for his 20s at 8 million and he's already rewarded them with a 99 point season and a pretty good 1st playoffs performance.

It's smart. The downsides are fairly low for players of that caliber. The buyout in a few years is fairly minimal as well. There are risks of course but locking up talent that early to long-term deals can be huge.

I wish our management had that level of aggressiveness to lock up talent years ago.

Is it just me or is the Sanderson thread much more civil than the Matthews extension thread?

Given the market, I think they really have to be pretty aggressive trying to get their rfas locked in long term, and that comes with a cost.

The most recent deal is fairish - though likely favours the player for the first 4 years or so

Will he get enough offensive looks with Chabot and Chychrun around?

High draft picks, incredible work ethics, physical players. With the exception of Chabot I think they're calculated risks that are more likely to pay off. Additionally, if your a market like Ottawa, that has hard times attracting free agents you're best to lock up your best assets long term first chance you get.

Chychrun plays RD on Ottawa so I believe so. I'm assuming Chabot and Chychrun play together and Sanderson with Zub and then Sanderson and Chychrun play together on PP2.

You think they're running 3-4 D on the powerplay?

Thought this was kind of peculiar... Think the WJC info is gonna go down soon.
