Not if Necas wasn't going to re-sign with the Canes for a reasonable amount. I actually give credit to Tulsky for pivoting to trade Rants, rather than be stubborn and stick to something that wasn't working out.

As much as it’s crazy to me that he didn’t know that he would sign after guentzel.

I appreciate not losing the player for nothing.

Wonder what la is going to do.

I thought mikko would go there.

Necas was having a great season for them and is under contract till next summer. Saying this deal had anything to do with Necas, seems like a bit of a stretch since they could have moved him this summer and gotten a return that isn't bolting after 10 games while still having Necas for this year's playoffs.

Will be interesting to see how Rantanen does in Dallas. He's clearly struggled without Mack and Makar. Dallas is a lot like Carolina. A lot of good players but no superstar. Do they have the players to bring the best out of Rantanen or are we going to continue seeing him struggle?

He should do much better. Maybe not Avs level production, he was in the best possible environment to produce in Colorado, but still lethal.

You would think, but I also didn't foresee him struggling that bad in Carolina. The Stars definitely have a little more offensive firepower, but there's no one on that roster close to Mackinnon or Makar, and Rantanen's value comes in his offence because his defensive game is very poor.

I heard the Canes owner was offering mostly deferred money for the extension. Its a cheap owner move I know all to well about (MLB Washington Nats). Players do not like this and its rare they opt for these contracts.

The Canes have almost $50M in cap space this offseason with no major RFAs. This proposed trade has nothing to do with Carolina's ability to pay.
Very respected former NHL’er I know says that Tom Dundon is viewed very poorly “actually a clown” by a lot of the hockey community. I think there may be something to not wanting to extend with that franchise

To sum up:

Carolina traded Necas (signed for another year), Drury, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Rantanen for Stankoven, Dallas 1st and maybe Marchment.

200.webp

Tulsky better have a hell of a TDL today because right now, imho, he looks like a fool....
