It's not nothing, but considering what some teams spend on rental guys at the tdl it's not a bad price
There's additional risk and actual cost acquiring him too though. 4 x10 for a 33 year old is pretty significant even after his incredible season

They gave up a protected first and second rounder, no? Thats a decent amount on its own
They are getting a Norris Winner in EK for protected 1st and a 2nd rounder for 3 yrs.
Leafs got ROR and Acciari for more and only last a few months.

At less than half the cap hit and no threat of those contracts being an anchor.

They took on 4 years at 10 million dollars for an age challenged player to play with their other age challenged core. It is the cap commitment that is the real cost. This may not "age" well.

Definitely a big swing for the fences by Kyle. It feels pretty automatic that we will get them in the post season.

Both are win now move. Doesn't matter if EK sucks for the remainder of his contract, as long as he can help the Pens score goals in the playoffs and win a Cup, it is well worth it.
THe Pens really didn't give up much for EK. Like if the Pens offer the same package for JT, I don't think a lot here would be happy.

But they also simultaneously moved out overpaid guys with term in their 30s, and they'll be in a rebuild in a few years anyway. So it's not so much adding risk as it is exchanging risk and adding significant potential upside for the price of a protected 1st and the difference between their 2nd and a high 3rd.

Oh yes,Dubas doing his thing! I was worried we might get him. Good for Pens

Dubas just can't resist those 11 million dollar players can he? 11 must be by far his favorite number.

He was getting him. If he was still Leafs GM we would see EK here.

The Pens are in a fairly unique situation though where they need to find ways to boost their teams competitiveness as much as possible over the next 2-3 seasons and after that know they will be rebuilding.

The risks with EK contract in that context are fairly minimal, and the payoff is likely far greater than what they could have alternatively done with those two picks.

It’s the risk. Karlson looked like he couldn’t turn for 2 years. Clearly karlson as is today is great.

The 2 years ago karlson was horrific at 11.5.

Him at 10 isn’t much better.

I honestly wonder if I would have traded JT for karlson straight up. The 2 years is a big sway. I think I would have done it

Of course…. This is fantasy land where they both waive

Recency bias is a yes for me in a EK and JT straight up trade.

Won’t worry about those two years as we might not even have AM, MM and Willie by then.

Perry and Granlund contracts were bad. I'd take Karlsson at 4 years over those two guys for 2 years.at least Karlsson sells tickets and he all have more of an impact than both Petry and Granlund. Good move but just a stop gap for Pittsburgh to get Crosby to retirement with a decent team. Should be some job security for Dubas, now he can just fiddle around with the role players; he's now working within his comfort zone.

Kyle Dubas gave up a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounder & prospect Mikhail Abramov to rent Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Accairi for 11 playoff games and Leafs have nothing to show for it now other than a New GM.

It's his signature special move. Ultimate spell.

The more you think about it, the whole family cry in the media was all for show. He traded away all the picks and since that's the only move (if we discount overpaying RFAs for a moment) he got, changing the scenery was the most logical move he made since coming here.

Anybody else think the rest of Canada's teams are dumpster fires?

I thought Canada produced the most, and the best, hockey players in the world? So why can't we have a single team in the entire country we can be proud of? A true contending threat to win the Stanley Cup?

I'm getting real sick of watching two American teams in the finals every year.

Most people just stop watching after their favourite team is eliminated, but I don't have a life. So I'll continue to watch two teams, neither of which I have have any emotional attachment to, play hockey in July for what is increasingly becoming a meaningless trophy. I should just start watching the World Championships like the Europeans do.

The only people who care about the Stanley Cup are the Canadians, because they can't win it, and the Americans, who won't give it back.

Like it's some sort of sick revenge for the war of 1812 or something.

Ownership for basically all Canadian teams are trash. Add on top how now most players will do anything to not play in Canada makes it a lot more difficult

I don't understand how the same shit owners can own more than one shit team.

Like why is Bell invested in both Montreal and Toronto? How is that not a conflict of interest? I can understand owning teams across different sports, but within the same sport?

In the same league...

Hockey in Canada is a disgrace right now.

I don’t get this “2-3 year window” for the Pens. Sid just turned 36 today, Malkin is 37, ditto Letang and they’ll have the oldest roster in the league, clearly on the decline. I’d argue the window is only open a small crack today and slammed shut probably this year. It’s silly to think a 38 year old Sid can still lead a team to a cup. Honestly, the “bold” move for Dubas was to convince his owners to begin the rebuild now, instead to trying to catch lightning in a bottle. I don’t see it, the core is too old. EK doesn’t get them over the top and now you’ve got what was considered a “boat anchor” contract just last summer. Seems more risky than sound management to me, even lauding what they gave up, it’s because with that contract he has limited appeal, hence this kind of return. I thought the Pens were done as legit contenders long before Dubas arrived, this just prolongs “there will be pain” imo.

You're going to go crazy when you see what our current GM gave away to drop a useful player in Sean Monahan just to miss the playoffs.

The NHL has very strict rules regarding many things like franchise ownership, gambling on games, salary cap circumvention, tampering, etc. Unless of course they choose to ignore the aforementioned. The NHL is a lawless clique that pretends to be upstanding and moral. Everyone should know better.

Crosby just put up 93 points and Malkin was ppg.

11th/16th in ppg for C.

They still have some gas in the tank.
