When you pay assets for a player, your concern is with regards to how he does with your team. Not how he did prior to acquiring him.

Here is a link to the Isles forum. New York Islanders

Most here would appreciate if you stopped flooding the Leafs trade thread with your Isles fan fiction.
LeafChief, I actually enjoy reading your comments (most of the times). You certainly don't mince words Lol. The Leafs Mgmt could benefit from your talent with all the double talk bs they spew at us.

How did you come to this incorrect conclusion?

Look at PK time and zone starts and it’s pretty easy to see how a coach is using a player. The coach didn’t trust Toews killing penalties, and he avoided using him for defensive zone faceoff.

Once Andy Greene was acquired at the 2020 deadline, it took him just 4 games to pass Toews on the all-time Islanders PK ice time list.

Thomas Hickey played 1/3 the games, and still played 10 times as much on the PK….

Luca Sbisa played 9 games and still almost doubled Toews I time on the PK.

The Islander coaches - for whatever reason - didn’t trust Toews defensively.

While true, it’s important to note that, as Leaf fans we should know, some young players just don’t get a fair chance and when they’re moved on they thrive elsewhere when given a shot

Trades are almost always judged by how the player does AFTER the trade is made. Good effort though.

If you wish to continue bickering about Lamoriello and the Isles, there is an entire forum for that. Head on over and introduce yourself.
They are also judged by how players on both sides of the trade do. As yet we don't even know who the picks will be.

Yes, he's a quality player, but with Pelech and Pulock, probably never more than #3 on the Isles, which may be why he filed for arbitration, which is likely one reason he was traded.

Toews is older than Morgan Rielly. It’s not like they were dealing with a teenager.
Yes! A whole sixteen days older!

I would think more significant is that Toews was drafted two years later than Rielly (108th pick compared to 5th), and only started his NHL career five years later.

Even more significant is the fact that the two players he was traded for haven't even been drafted yet, so how can we possibly assess the trade?

But you're right: he's not a teenager, and Lou and Trotz had him for two seasons. Maybe they accurately assessed what he was worth TO THEM, and decided a trade was best.

Though this happens with every trade. Just because a GM thinks they got fair value doesn't mean the rest of the hockey world has to agree.

Lou and Trotz didn't like the guy (for whatever reason) and Isles management certainly didn't want to save money to pay him. Sakic and Bedar with the Avs saw things differently and ended with a top pairing D man out of the deal.

Just because a player doesn't PK, it doesn't mean they are "sheltered defensively" or an "offensive specialist". As for zone starts, he started 70% of the time on the fly (2nd), 12% of the time in the neutral zone (5th), 10% of the time in the offensive zone (3rd), and 7% of the time in the defensive zone (4th). Nothing about that suggests he was "sheltered defensively", or an "offensive specialist", or that "Dobson was the only one sheltered more".

Sure, but you missed my point entirely. A good player going one way is only part of a trade. Can you tell me how good the players going the other way are?

Not saying it's identical, as we have no way of assessing the current deal, but how about when we got Phil Kessel? We got a good player, so we won, and Boston lost? Boston think they won easily, because they got rid of a player who didn't fit their system, and got two good players in return.

I'm just saying it's way too early to assess.

Poor guy. His injuries probably started in his last Leaf season.

Yep. Likely one of the reasons Leafs brass opted to let him walk.

I remember Mirtle suggesting be had been willing to sign an extension at a discount. So there must have been reason the Leafs didn't follow through with it.

I always liked him, hopefully he can get healthy again

Hopefully this time allows him to get back to some of the game he once had. He's always relied on his smooth skating, and with back and hip issues, that wouldn't be possible. At 31, it's hard to say if he can get back to near that level. If not, he'll be LTIR for two years, and perhaps retire.

No interest in Subban?

I'm sure Devils may eat up some of his salary

He does suck but at least he can man the PP with right handed hard shot

A bomb on the PP is something this team could use but I'm not sure Subban is the right fit.
I guess if he could check his ego and play bottom pair and PP it could work. Tough call.
