Awfully convenient for a guy who had missed 15 games already this season to have a flare up of a very chronic injury that has caused many players over decades to miss extended time? :whaaa?:

awfully convenient the timing of said flare up was the exact moment eichel was ready to go.

Or, it just became clear that it wasn't worth him trying to play through it anymore and told him to sit regardless if he wanted to continue to try.

That's a prudent thing to do for the team and the player both.

Look how long Zach tried playing through his back injury when he clearly shouldn't have.

Just because it helps them cap-wise doesn't make it a loop-hole that needs closing.

As I said, I didn't think it was with Kane, I didn't think it was with Kucherov and don't think it is now.

This rule was created for just these situations, so team's aren't "sunk" because of a long term loss of a single player. It's the clear intent of the rule. The NHL has said as much on multiple occasions.

Do you think Stone would've went on LTIR had Eichel not been healthy enough to return to action? Or do you think the timing is pure coincidence?

I just posted above that it's possible the team said enough is enough on him trying to play through it. That would make it "not" pure coincidence, but to me, that doesn't make it "shady" either since he has a very real and well documented back problem has has been giving him problems for a long time.

So you believe that Stone was destined to go on LTIR and Eichel's recovery didn't factor into the equation at all?

I didn't say that. I said it's likely NOT coincidence, but just because the team makes a prudent decision for BOTH the cap AND the player, that doesn't make it shady.

I believe his injury is very real, and that sitting is in his best interest either way. The team making him sit for both their and his interests, isn't a "loop hole". That is what I'm saying.

I believe he could have ended up on LTIR even without the Eichel situation, but the Eichel situation probably influenced the team on stepping in sooner on such a situation.

Often times, recovery for a player is left between the player and the doctor, but we have seen team's take active hands as well... which actually caused the Eichel trade to begin with, since the Sabres wouldn't allow him the path he and his doctor recommended.

Unpopular opinion time: every time I watch Seider play, I feel like I'm not seeing what a lot of others are. I'm not sure why he's being hyped up to the degree that he is right now. I recognize the potential he has, I recognize that he's still very young and playing a lot of minutes on a bad team, and the production is there.

That said, he still leaves a ton to be desired in his own zone. Calder finalist for sure, but I've seen quite a few people try to claim that he's already a top 15-ish or so defenseman in the league at this point, and I don't see it. He makes far too many mistakes every night to truly be one of the best right now. I think he's become very overrated.

So you play by one set of rules for 82 games and then by different ones in the playoffs. If the system isn't rigged how was Kucherov deemed fit for play on DAY ONE of the playoffs, as many predicted months earlier on these boards. There can't be that many MD's posting here that could all determine his exact return date. If you lose a player, you lose a player, injuries happen. NHL needs to fix this.

The NHL created that by not paying players a salary in the playoffs long before the cap was ever a thing.

You want the cap to affect the playoffs, you need to pay players a salary in the playoffs.

For the record, the trade deadline would be pretty boring if it wasn't setup like it is either. Hardly any contender could afford to trade for anyone. Teams can afford to trade for players in March that they could've never fit under the cap in Oct.

That is a better reason than all of your aforementioned ones. Are any players paid for post season play in any sport? Their caps still hold.

NFL players get a weekly check for games played in the post season. A flat rate equal to a player paid $660,000.

As for the "cap holding", debatable.

The Rams were at the cap, yet could afford to sign Weddle for the playoffs. The cap gets tenuous around playoff time.

The NBA doesn't have a true cap like the NHL and NFL in the first place. MLB has no cap.

The NHL has a cap system and salary structure that has both equaling zero after the end of the regular season.

There is no cap left by the post season.

Rams were about $138,000 under the cap. It rolls over to next year. NBA doesn't have a hard cap unlike the NFL and NHL, probably not applicable. So the NFL manages to stick to the cap through the whole season. Why not the NHL where you don't have to prepare for nearly the same uncertainties?

Weddle was paid $ 300,00 for his post season play. That's more than the $138,000 they were under the cap.

Cap rollover happens in the NHL too in some instances BTW.

My point is... the NHL cap/salary structer reaches zero after game 82, thus the cap is no longer an issue in the post season. It was intended this way from the very beginning. Thus why the NHL has always said there is no loop hole, the rules are working as intended.

I get some fans don't like it. I personally am completely ok with it because this is what the NHL actually WANTS.

So a few weeks ago, I brought up the "what if" scenario of what would happen if Vegas screwed up their LTIR situation and put themselves over the cap.

Turns out their trade to dump Dadonov on the Ducks to clear cap space yesterday may not actually go through. There are more details in the follow-up tweets to the first one below. Essentially Vegas wasn't aware that the Ducks were on Dadonov's no-trade list. Who's to blame? Could blame multiple people, but probably the team. Some question as to whether Ottawa sent it to them when he was traded to Vegas originally, but still, Vegas should have retrieved that list.

That could force Vegas into a situation where they potentially have to make a trade after the deadline. The traded player would not be eligible to play rest of season.

So this just got really interesting.

Words cannot express how hilarious I find this.

Couldn't have happened to a better team...

Wow, stick in perfect position to stick check at least, instead lifts it up and out of the way to let him go right on by... he should be embarrassed!

I posted in a trade thread in the off-season regarding Dumba and what his role in DC would be, and got obliterated by their fans when I mentioned how big of a liability Johnny is in his own zone. Still appears I was right along with every other analytic measure there is.
