I believe that's what Russo reported.
It seems strange that he automatically signed a two-way with Toronto after being traded. I think that's the narrative being pushed, but I think there was more to it then just a two-way contract and I think it goes back to why Sturm and McBain decided to leave.

Sturm was traded. He didn't decide to leave...

Wasn't that the expectation the whole time? Or did they expect it to stay flat next year?

It was pretty much explicitly said by Russo that Sturm was traded because he wasn't interested in an extension. So, sure, he didn't "leave", but he was traded because he didn't want to stay. So whatever you want to call that.

Sturm pretty much decided to leave when he decided he didn't want to take a discount. Either he was going to walk at the end of the season or Guerin was going to trade him.
No, he didn't decide to leave. He was due a raise the Wild couldn't afford, so the Wild were assertive in moving him.

Stop trying to rewrite history. Sturm had no choice in the move. Contracts were never discussed.

Is it surprising a guy getting healthy scratches regularly, not being offered an extension says he's not interested in an extension?

The Wild didn't want him, he recognized it, he said he's not interested as well when asked.

I don't know where you're getting your information from. Why would the Wild offer a long term contract extension to a guy they didn't want?

Point blank, the Wild wanted Sturm on a long term extension, Sturm said no, Guerin traded him. So Sturm didn't "leave" on his own terms, but if he wanted to be here, he would have been. It was Sturm that didn't want the Wild, do not fool yourself.

That was the expectation, but it was never set in stone. In theory, the expectation is it goes up by 1M every year until the debt is paid off (apparently 2025).

Actually, yes he did decide to leave. He was due a raise, but he could have worked within the confines of what Minnesota could provide. I'm going to be curious to see how long it takes Sturm to sign and for how much. Because if he takes less than 2 million and signs immediately, something doesn't really jive there. But Sturm did mention he wouldn't take a discount for Minnesota.

Russo did mention that contracts were discussed and that Sturm held firm that he wasn't going to take a discount, so Minnesota had to move him. But from what Russo reported there were discussions about Sturm's future with the Wild.

And that's the crux of the issue here; Sturm didn't feel like he had a fair chance with the Wild, so he decided to move on from the organization be it this summer or Guerin moving him before the deadline, but the writing was on the wall that Sturm was not going to be a Wild player past this summer. Hell I even mentioned it last summer that Sturm probably isn't going to stick around with the Wild.

Also was it really necessary for MacKinnon to scrap with Dumba? They could have tossed MacDermid to fight. That's what they have him for right?
Dumba would just laugh off a plug like MacDermid if he approached him after that. MacKinnon, sure, why not.

If it’s a broken hand, that will put MacKinnon out for close to the remainder of the regular season. Super unfortunate. Don’t always need to go after the smaller guy who just blew up the larger guy you call “moose” with a clean hit…

Eh, MacDermid and Des could have scrapped in place of Dumba and MacKinnon. But it was an unnecessary fight.

That's just the type of player MacKinnon is. He's a competitor to his core. He's not going to wait for someone else to take care of the battles. Is it stupid? Maybe. But the guys in his locker room love him.

I can appreciate the fire that Mack plays with.

But this makes Dumba's hit even sweeter.

Legal. Takes the teams best player out for 5 minutes and now possibly into playoff time.

I never WISH injury on a player. But if he is injured as a result of something of his own volition, like deciding to fight, man I am very pleased.

Unfortunately, we played stupid while Dumba was off the ice and gave up 2 goals anyway... both off faceoffs, one on the PP.

BTW - yes, the injury is suspected to be from the Dumba fight.

Which is why it's dumb to fight after clean hits for all parties involved.
