What does that mean for them?
They’re over the cap, pretty significantly, when their injured players come back. It means they will have to find ways to shed cap. Being that their “good players” are fairly expensive, it’ll be tricky.

They CAN make trades but any player traded can’t play in the regular season or playoffs. Significantly raising the cost.

The other option is to put people on waivers, getting nothing in return if any of the players are claimed.

Mennel traded from Toronto to the Flyers. Love to hear the spin on this on how BG chased a prospect out of town again.

Apparently the league is at least considering enforcing the salary cap during the playoffs in the future.

He contributes plenty to their demise, a player with that much talent needs to show up for more than the 2-3 shifts a game when he decides to actually skate. If he had Crosby or Kaprizov's compete level the Oilers would be running away with the league. Well probably not, that team still has no idea how to play defense at all and the goalies are abysmal, but they would at least be solidly in the playoffs.

Pitt dropped 11 on Detroit today. First time someone has scored 11 in the cap-era apparently.

I mean, he's on pace for 123 points and is the best offensive driving player in the league. By all metrics, he is defensively responsible and is above the 50% threshold for xGA & xGA/60 for forwards. Hard to see how he is contributing to their demise. Aside from having some more vocal leadership, there is not much more a player can contribute. Their defense, goaltending and depth are horrendous.

Menell only played 20 games for them (don't know if he was injured or not). Fletcher signed him and took a flyer (pun lightly applied here) on him. Minnesota lost depth at right, and at this point, rather have Menell over a guy like Benn and definitely over some guys in the AHL. More so, he signed a one year, two-way contract with Toronto, so I think Fletcher is grabbing a guy he's familiar with at a cheap cost.

The only thing that pulls away from Menell is he's yet another undersized defenseman. But I don't know why Guerin couldn't sign a good depth defenseman that signed a one-year contract, two-way mind you, at a decent price and added depth and familiarity with the system.

Don't forget that He played in KHL last season.
Signed by Toronto to a 2way 400k / 750k ... No chance BG was going to pay him 400k in Iowa also BG's guy is Addison
Was a healthy scratch for most of the season for the Marlies ... Mennel, Duszak and Kivilhaime are basiclly all the same player
Marlies have been trying to give him away but no AHL team was going to eat 400k salary for him
Marlies just got Myers from Milwaukee on loan
Flyers, actually GMCF or Flahr , are familiar with Mennel and needed a little help in Lehigh Valley.

Hopefully he gets some games with Flyers but I personally think Clendening is ahead of him on depth chart

That's so bizarre to me; we're paying guys like Gordeev, Hicketts, Mermis, Lizotte, and Czuzman 750K roughly...

No we are not.

$750K would be their NHL salaries, with their cap hits being the same excluding Gordeev whose NHL cap hit would be ~$791K. When they are in the AHL, their salaries are significantly smaller.

Minor League Salaries

Gordeev: $70K
Hicketts: $300K
Mermis: $300K
Lizotte: $175K
Czuczman: $200K

That's what I was trying to find. I thought it was strange, but still I don't think giving Menell much more was that big of a deal.

He refused to sign a two way, he wanted a one way and didn’t sign until he was shown that he had zero value league wide and wasn’t going to get that anywhere.

Do we actually know that? I mean there was a lot of stuff being thrown around about the situation.
