That just seems like an absurdly large amount of money to play hockey to me.

He is one of the best players in the league so he's probably worth it?
26 year old (almost) 1st line center who has won a Calder, Hart, Pearson, and two Richard's? Yeah, probably going to be worth it. If he'd gone to free agency I would have had the Wild give him max AAV for 7 years if they could.

Wild fans would lose their minds if we had a 1C like Matthews. He would be worth the price.

I want a winner... I don't care if we do it by getting a #1C. Mathews hasn't done anything to warrant that kind of payday...give me a Bergeron, anyday. I'd rather have two JEE's and 3M in my pocket than Mathews.

I’ll take matthews and jee on the same team. 18m for top two centers is pretty good in my book.

I'd also pay a 26 year old version of Bergeron max money to solve the #1C issue. In fact, I'd prefer him! He put up 306 goals, 703 points, 6 Selke trophies, and 5 more nominations for the Selke after that off-season. That'd be the best player the Wild have ever had.

The idea of using the Parise+Suter cap space to go after a franchise center is probably the only great idea I've heard of what to do with it. I'd be in favor of using all the space on that, though obviously I wouldn't make a maximum contract my first offer. I'd just be willing to go up to that to outbid everyone else who won't. It's also worth keeping in mind, they have to be of a franchise center caliber or it's a huge waste.

Yes, a Bergeron clone would be the preference, but there aren't many Bergeron types

I’d like a Matthews and a JEE. We’ve already got a JEE.

The problems in Toronto have little to with Matthews not playing more like Bergeron. Matthews is a great goal scorer. 50%+ in the dot. Big. Prime age (25). He’s exactly the 1C type I would want. Toronto has made questionable financial decisions elsewhere and that has limited their potential.

Can't teach an old dog new tricks

Leopard can't change his spots.

Once an abusive coach, always an abusive coach? JFC, what an idiot. He just destroyed his career, after someone gave him a chance at a redo from past mistakes.

Honestly, I don't know what to think about his Columbus tenure. It feels like this could be something where he was being invasive, or it could be something harmless that got blown up because he's already under scrutiny. Boone Jenner claims it was just a "I want to get to know you" thing, and was harmless.

So, did he say "Show me the pictures in your phone, I want to know what kind of person you are," or did he say "Do you mind showing me some of your photos? I'd like to get to know you." Two very different ways of saying the same thing, one of which comes off as invasive, the other of which allows for consent. Did he ask the player's permission before throwing them up on a projector? I don't know.

I think we can probably all agree though, if your actions are already under a magnifying glass, maybe don't do anything weird and potentially creepy.

His past denies him the benefit of the doubt. The fact that CBJ took their time investigating this, then let him go, says it all for me.

Do I have it right that the reason Babcock was fired was because he asked players to share personal photos from their phones with him?

I think he was putting them up on a television so that everyone can see them.

Very similar to what he did in the past.

Apparently he went to the level of intimidating some of the players into it, despite the fact that others had no issues and freely shared their family pictures.

I have no problems with asking, I do think that intimidating players into it is clearly too far. Some people prefer to keep their family and work lives separate... let them do so. It's their choice.

Asking in the first place is already at the line, if not over. If I went in to work tomorrow and my boss said my team was going to sit down together and look at each others personal photos on our phones, I would absolutely not be participating in that, and I would probably go to HR if for no other reason than to let them know that's going on in case it escalates from there (intimidation, retaliation, punishment, etc). It's entirely inappropriate and not relevant or necessary to the job these guys perform.

If he wanted everyone to get to know each other better, he could have done it in so many better ways. Hell back when I started college the RA's for my floor handled it better than that, and they were just 20-21 year olds. Make it a social event, get everyone together to do something fun, and any information anyone wanted to share is volunteered only.

Having someone "ask" to see your private info when they are just someone on the street is no problem. You just say, "f***, no", or whatever you wish. When the person who asks is your boss, it's a completely different story.

Again, Babcock is a completely unrepentant control freak in the mold of Mike Keenan. Like Mike Keenan, we might see him coaching in Russia next.
