I have a feeling Dumba is going to re-sign back here next season.

Well, that depends on how Faber, Addison, and possibly Hunt/ROR play, and even then, it's unlikely. If Dumba plays well this year he will get a decent contract with term. If he doesn't, why bring him back? His salary will still be higher than the three i mentioned, and next year is just as bad as this year in terms of a 14.7M cap penalty.

I would far rather that we put some money into a forward, assuming that Zucc is not re-signed due to age and decline.

We have got a ton of good defensive prospects. Blocking them by signing Dumba makes no sense to me.

I don't see Addison having a long-term future here and Billy has such a hard-on for Dumba that I don't think he would've hit UFA if the cap wasn't an issue this season.

Following season, they've got $19.4M available with this roster:

Kap - X - X
Johansson - Ek - Boldy
Khus (ELC) - Rossi - X
Dewar ($1.5M) - Gaudreau - Duhaime ($1.5M)

Brodin - Faber
Middleton - Spurgeon
Hunt - X
Merrill

Gus
Wallstedt

Dumba @ 5 x $5M leaves them with $14.4M, which should be more than enough to fill out the remaining 3 forward spots with some solid UFA signings. I wouldn't bring him back on that kind of deal, but I definitely can see Guerin thinking this way.

Doubt he's looking to be a 3rd pairing behind Spurgeon and Faber
I could see Guerin pitching him as the eventual Spurgeon replacement in a couple years.

I like what AZ has done this offseason, 3rd in the Central (it's weak overall) is where I have them. A huge home ice advantage, a ton of cap space (LTIR), and a stupid amount of 2nd round picks that can be used to fill in the holes (goalie and another d-man) to make a push this year.

RIP to Rick Jenneret!! one of the best!! LaLaLafontaine!!! May Day! May Day! May Day!

I know I'm in the minority, but I never personally cared for his calls....a little too "grating" for my style. Heard that he was a great guy, though, and obviously a legend in Buffalo. RIP and wishing the best for his family and friends.

Oh man, I saw that Lyubushkin trade on the main trade boards, and I was like "Buh bye, Addison" until I realized it was just our pick, not our trade. This guy should just sign already. A one year deal, $1.2-1.4M, come into camp ready to go, kill that puck and get a better contract. I think that's honestly his best bet.

Unless Addison signs for his QO MN really can't add anyone else to the roster without going over the cap. So I don't expect him to get a "fair" deal.

Thing is, if Duhaime is only getting 1.1M, are they going to want to pay Addison more? I don’t think so…Dean likes Duhaime.

I'm not sure how "only" fits in. Duhaime is overpaid for a 1 year deal. He had the same QO is Addison, and he was injured a good chunk of last season. He should have gotten the same (ish) pay as Dewar. Heck Shaw was better than Duhaime and he wasn't even QOed due to getting injured.

MarJo getting a $500k+ raise (and full NMC) from his last 2 contracts for 1 good month is another strain on the cap.

Frankly, I think the only one who cares what they're paid is Guerin, and I don't think he cares about pay vs. lineup role, I think he only cares that they fit in the cap. Proof of that in either direction would be Goligoski sitting half the season in the pressbox, and Hartman playing 1st line center.

The way he pronounced John Vanbiesbrouck drove me crazy. He threw a D in there.
