I didn’t like that .Guerin/Dean played Fleury over Talbot in the playoffs, without even alternating. I also didn’t like that Guerin resigned Fleury for two more years, rather than keep Talbot to play out his final year, and either sign a cheap backup, or use McIntyre this year, and possibly a bit of Wallstedt.

As it turns out, Talbot has been injured, though who knows what would’ve happened if he had stayed here. Gus is turning into a fine young goalie, after a rocky start. Fleury is predictably mediocre….not a terrible signing, but not a great one. If we had Talbot and a 1M backup + McIntyre+ Wallstedt we would be 2M or so to the good next year, which would’ve created more room to sign Fiala, but it’s hard to say because we have no idea how much Gus will get…

Luck or not, I have to hand it to Guerin and the crew for getting Gus. I would’ve preferred that we trade Greenway for Gus, not re-signed Fleury, had Talbot’s deal over with going into next year, and still had Fiala, but that, is Monday am qb’ing of the first order.

My initial reaction on the Talbot trade was negative, because Fleury was far and away worse than Talbot but I was wrong about the return. Gus is legit and I didn’t see that coming. Overall we’re better for it, and I was wrong.

I also think part of my reaction was based on BG just being a giant douche about the situation

The majority of OTT fans were more than fine with the trade at the time, also. Gus had not inspired confidence with his play there. He also had a pretty bad beginning few games here, I seem to recall.

Anyone that paid attention to Gus before last year knew he had potential to be good. Really good. Last year he got shelled behind a terrible OTT team.

Sure, that year could have broke him but I believe he was young enough to snap back.

I always took what they said about Gus with a grain of salt. Their defense was horrendous.

I think the general idea, going back to the original post, is that no one thought Guerin was an idiot for trading Talbot or getting Gus, they just didn't like the way Guerin handled the Talbot situation last year, from playoffs through the trade.

A lot of us did find re-signing Flower to be bad prior to the trade.

The trade itself was viewed as needed because of that failure.
Hence why the phrase "failed into Gus" has been used.

Yeah, I was one of them, but that's largely separate from trading Talbot for Gus after the fact. Guerin's original plan was to go into the season with Fleury and Talbot, not Fleury and Gus. And he doesn't get credit for trading Talbot because Talbot forced that trade after Guerin messed up by signing Fleury. And it's yet to be seen how much credit he gets for acquiring Gus. For all we know, Ottawa called us, asked for Talbot, and Guerin just needed any goalie back, and it happened to be Gus.

It's great that it worked out in the end, but it wasn't some master plan Guerin cooked up to get Gus specifically.

I'll give Guerin credit for the Gus trade, remember Murray was also in OTT around the same time. Given GMBG's track record with guys from his time in PIT, how tempting do you think it was for him to have had a Murray/MAF combo in net for the next 2 years?

That's what I'm saying though. He probably did ask for Murray and Ottawa said no to retaining enough on him, and he couldn't fit under our cap, so Guerin was forced to take Gus.

Murray is like $1m more (after retention) than Talbot and OTT paid a 3rd and a 7th to dump him. I don't see that being the being the sticking point. There is plenty of ways he could have made the cap work for this year and next if he really wanted Murray.

It was partially tongue in cheek. Either way, I think he ended up with the right goalie for the "wrong" reasons. I think Ottawa initiated those conversations and I think Guerin just saw a cheap backup in Gus.

I think OTT forced the trade a little by giving TOR Murray. IIRC TOR and OTT (among a couple others) were linked to Talbot trades. I don't think GMBG was just sitting on his hands waiting for the phone to ring.

I do think GMBG got lucky that it all worked out, but so far he did make orange juice out of lemons.

Alexander Holtz get traded? Apparently he is removing all devils stuff from his profiles.
God I hate social media. The moment someone removes something from their profile it's...oh my god they got traded!

This isn't an attack against you either DJ. I like you a lot.

He got sent back to the AHL.

This social media thing is something my kid (and her friends) does when she is mad (hissy fit/tantrum) about something. It seems like the modern day equivalent of me going out and having a bitch and moan fest with my buddies over some beers.

Fleury wasn't far and away worse then Talbot.

He was slightly worse, with the tougher workload.

But that narrative of Talbot being better after Fleury arrived ignores that Talbot wavered between mediocre and terrible the 1.5 years before he was acquired, and was down right awful for 2 months before he was acquired.

So glad the blues have three 1sts in this draft
Hopefully they do as well as the Bruins did on theirs.

What happened before Fleury arrived isn’t relevant that the conversation. This about the play of the two of them on this team. And if we want to talk about the former, Fleury had a miserably bad season before moving here, and no, it wasn’t because he played for Chicago. There are loads of data supporting this.

After the TDL last year:

Talbot GAA: 2.27
Talbot SV%: .925
11 starts, 8 vs playoff teams.

VS
Fleury GAA: 2.74
Fleury SV%: .908
11 starts, 6 vs playoff teams.

The difference between these stats is significant. Also, where’s the tougher workload?
