Columbus is going to be a team to watch; Jiricek was apparently doing well in the AHL and they are going to be adding another top prospect this year. With FIVE first round draft picks including two in the top 5 and another probably this year, as long as they get good coaching they are going to be a dark horse team in a year or two.

Isn't "dark horse" another term for a bubble team? Just not trying to sound so down on them being a bubble team?

Not really. A dark horse team is usually a bubble team, but a bubble team isn't a dark horse team. A dark horse team is usually one that everything is coming together for them at the right time. They get healthy, make a good trade, a coaching change, etc.

Like MN is a bubble team right now (same as last year). Say they get healthy and make a trade for ROR/Horvat, then everything falls into place and their FWD group just clicks. Then they would fall into a dark horse team for the West (it's just weak). They aren't as good as VGK or COL (should be), but they can play just about even with them.

Outside of this site, I think Columbus isn't talked about enough in terms of prospects. They blow Minnesota out of the water in terms of skill and talent. I remember in the summer how I ranked Columbus over Minnesota and got raked over the coals for that take. As well, most talk about Detroit or Anaheim or Montreal or even New Jersey over Columbus. But Columbus has done an excellent job of rebuilding after taking down Tampa Bay a few years ago.

They have done some shrewd drafting like getting Bjorkstrand over Gabriel, shrewd trades like trading Seth Jones for David Jiricek, Adam Boqvist and Cole Sillinger, trading Nick Foligno for a 1st round pick (Ceulemens), trading for Laine and Roslovic for Dubois.

Like he's been putting on a clinic and I wouldn't be surprised in a year or two things start clicking for Columbus.

The National Hockey League announced today that it has fined the Toronto Maple Leafs' organization $100,000 for the team's travel to St. Louis on Dec. 26, 2022. This team activity was in violation of Article 16.5(b) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association.

Is $100k really even a penalty to the Leafs?

NHL fines have always been a joke

Such a weird situation. The rule is the rule and you can claim it's a stupid rule, but it was collectively bargained that way. I'm sure it's to protect the players from being forced to travel or work during the holidays, which is good. If the Toronto players agreed they wanted to travel the night before, and the team agreed to swallow the fine, not a problem. Toronto's ownership probably said "go for it, we don't care about the 100k".

I think that the main point is that it has been noticed, and the club fined. If they do it again, the fine might be something like $500,000. That will hurt, even for the Leafs.

I wonder if they did it to escape weather?

BUF got hit with high SW winds that lead to big lake effect snowfalls from Lake Erie. It has to be almost a due East wind off of Lake Ontario for TOR to get lake effect snow.

This is one of those weeks where I'm glad I don't live in Buffalo anymore. Some of the pics I've been sent are crazy.

I will post the actual stellar game.

Stopped 49 of 51 last night against the best team in the league and beat ‘em 3-2 in the SO.

I watched the highlights it was a very good night for Talbot. I don't remember him stealing a game like that when he was with the Wild.

I don't recall the last time I thought a Wild goalie stole a game. Dub had a few the season they traded for him.

Talbot has always been inconsistent, same as Fleury just different styles. No idea why they thought adding Fleury and his contract was a good idea.

More perspective... I can understand the frustration shown by JT, but maybe calm down a bit more when waving him off...

I’m sorry, JT Miller doesn’t run the f***ing team. The coach wasn’t waving him to the bench and it’s pretty standard to go back to your net if your team has the puck in your d zone. Miller was a complete clown on that play.

The coach had waved him to the bench, Miller saw it before he got the puck, the goaltender missed it, hence his hesitation after Miller got the puck. Hence why Miller was frustrated, he just reacted completely wrong...

This is what I see too. BB (doing a coach thing by making sure he has the personnel he wants and not taking a too many men penalty) is taking to the extra FWD, who stands up, ready to go on the ice. He ends up sitting back down once the goalie retreated. Then eventually hops over the boards when the goalie finally does get to the bench.

JT could have handled it better, for sure. Last minute, down by 1, and the goalie does something unexpected, and seconds are ticking off the clock; I get the frustration.

That article is going by the video, which most of the coaches can't even be seen in most of it. In the main board thread, there are people who saw him signal multiple times.... as seen in the following article, Bruce claims to have signaled twice with a hold off between. He blames himself, not Miller. He understands the frustration.

“I called him and then I sent him back and then I called him, and so to me, I think we’re making a mountain out of a molehill. All he’s [Miller] doing is trying to get the guy to go off the ice with a minute to go to try to tie the game.”
Miller was looking right at the bench as he was positioned for the breakout, saw the signal, then gets the puck and sees his goaltender retreating again... frustration when trying to win is understandable. Handled it like an ass, but the frustration is at least justified.

One thing I do like about Guerin is that Miller seems like the type of guy he avoids. He's a lazy prima donna.
