Around the League--Dog Days of Summer

Not really sure where to put this, but here it goes.

Tomorrow is the big day, from the end of the Sparks game through sometime on wednesday, they will be making and painting the ice.

I'll be going to work with my dad for about 20 hours to see the process, although he has worked their for 13 years, school conflicts haven't allowed me to go until now.

Make sure you get lots of pictures.

I think that's a great idea. Would love to see the process laid out in photos. If you can, please post them here.

Thanks.

Yep, they'll come crashing back down to earth. The NHL isn't a counter-punchers league. You might be able to punch above your weight class for a season, but it's rare to do it season after season and be successful. Everyone except Flames fans will be saying I told you so in about 9 months.

We said the same thing before the 2nd half of last season. Sometimes luck just refuses to leave someone's side.

The Flames the are the real deal. Stout D, and strong down the middle, with speedy wingers.

Goal is the only area they are average. The Flames will contend for a playoff spot again.

Not worried about the Flames. First and foremost, I want to see how the Kings approach the season with all this rest. Fact is, if they play anywhere near the level we know they are capable of, the Flames won't be a team to worry about. If they're still swimming in mediocrity, then it won't look a lot different from last season, frankly.

Flames are being underrated. They have one of the best D's in the league, perhaps the best. They exploited the Kings last year big time with their speed and mobility.

Kings exploited themselves by taking nights off, playing worse than their AHL affiliate, and resting on their laurels. A few players have basically said they weren't worried because they had been out of the playoff picture before. Pathetic.

Pretty much.

I think it was Muzzin who said they need to start playing with urgency... after losing to the Oilers with 2 games remaining.

And I'm going to have to see more than 1 season of playoff caliber hockey from the Flames before I think they're for real. Like I said, they won an inordinate amount of games coming from behind. Forwards also need to contribute to defense, not just defensemen. And what about their goaltending? We'll see if they actually start outshooting their opponents next season and if they don't have to rely on comeback victories. They were one of the worst possession teams in the league and terrible at draws. If they don't markedly improve on that, they won't make the playoffs. Our guys were the polar opposite last season. Best possession team but a historically bad extra time team and blew more 3rd period leads than they have over the last 5 seasons, I bet. Props to the Flames from scrapping their way to the playoffs while the Kings crapped their way out of it. But I'll need to see more than 1 season of success built on unsustainable metrics to be a believer.

The Flames are an awful possession team. But they are not exactly built on possession of the puck.

They are a more, quick strike team. They remind me of a better version of the 2012 Yotes team.

Never mind the ice being made and painted, the bigger news here is the Sparks season is over.

In all honesty, it is a pretty cool process. The AHL team we had here in Hamilton gave me a chance to have a look see at the process. Pretty interesting how they go about getting the lines and ads/logos down.

I'm getting Colorado vibes from them. Made the playoffs in 13/14 and everyone had them in the top the following season and they flopped.

Calgary is looking good but I'd give them another season before I think they are legit competition.

Kings shot themselves in the foot. Everyone likes to say the Flames owned them and Kopitar was Kesler's *****, but they just flat out sucked.

Not really. All the numbers people could (and did) tell you that Colorado was going to regress. Much like Toronto in 12-13.

Now Calgary (unlike the aforementioned two teams) have gone out and made some improvements (Hamilton, Frolik) so they won't crash as hard as the latter two.

Personally I think Calgary with be a better team this year. But will finish with the same or less points in the standings.

I've heard both sides of this argument before but I still think it's far too early to tell with CGY. THey had one good season, and other than that there's basically nothing there to say with confidence that yes, that is sustainable over more than a one season sample size. I don't think they're going to crash as hard as TOR, but I also don't think they're going to be a world beater as soon as people think either.

The flames last year had several players have career years, and score a ton with the goalei pulled. It is very unlikely both of those continue.
However I think they have made enough changes and through the growth of their youth they should not need to comeback as much as they did last year, and if some players regress adding Frolik, hamilton and for all intents and purposes Benett will help to offset.
I could see them finishing 2nd in the division or just missing the playoffs. The west is that close

Unfortunately, it's not. They have 4 more games (2 at home), and they'll probably make the playoffs, 8 of 12 teams do. For the record, I was asked to find that out, I didn't know it off the top of my head.

Sour grapes Peddie (Former CEO of the leafs)...being petty. He's like the old man on the block who chases the kids out of his yard. I'm pretty sure the neighbors know how to dial a phone and report it if they are that disturbed.

...and I'm sure the cops are very responsive. Have you ever lived next to someone that even remotely comes close to this kind of behavior? It's a pain in the ass.

How much fun would it be to be the neighbor of a young star in the NHL? Not much.

in your 20's tons of fun
in your 30's and 40's not so fun
once the kids leave the house - fun for 5 years
after that not so fun.

I am anticipating a mid life crisis once my kids leave home.
