Watched a replay of the Cats-Oilers game the other night. A sloppy game but quite entertaining.
An interesting note came up during one of the in-between periods in which they listed the current favorites to get to the SC Final. Oilers were top followed by the Canes.
FWIW, I just don't see it without a significant add by TDL. My current top tier is Toronto, Florida and Edmonton and Canes are in the second tier of Jersey, Dallas, Winnipeg and Minnesota.
Thoughts?
I think we're right there. The thing is we have a team full of worker bee players and those teams can make a splash in the playoffs. If the scoring dries up, we're in big trouble, which is always possible when we don't have a Kucherov or McDavid or Crosby on the team. However, we've scored 4 goals in seemingly every game this year, and virtually everybody on the team is getting in on the scoring pretty equally. That to me bodes best for our playoff hopes. We have decent 1st line types but also some of the best depth in the league. It's wild how Jordan Martinook has found another gear this year, and how Eric Robinson looks like he belongs.
Historically deadline acquisitions have been good for depth players but not super impactful towards winning the cup. Usually teams get a nice piece but nothing front and center to get them to the cup. If I were Eric Tulsky I'd be on the hunt for a piece that can fit with the team long term, considering especially all our capspace we'll have next year (and considering I doubt we'll buy one of the premier free agents if Marner or Rantanen get there).
If I had to pick a guy, I'm picking Ryan O'Reilly as I piggybacked on someone else's post earlier this week. He'd be a massive 2C upgrade.
