Don Waddell had similar name value after Atlanta. Look at him now.

It’s a real nice opportunity for reputation rehab. The team should be on the upswing. There’s quite a bit of young talent locked into long term 2nd contracts. That allows room for some mistakes as the next person builds around that.
While true, there's a big difference in being considered a bum of a GM that can't manage the cap and that makes horrible trades while running the Bruins and the Oilers, and being considered a bum of a GM on a team where the owners are deliberately sabotaging it.

I very much agree with the general point; it is a true statement to make, however, that Waddell always kept a clean cap sheet in Atlanta. Yes, there were a couple of contracts that didn't pan out the greatest, but they never had issues with grazing the ceiling during his reign. This was very much not the case with Chiarelli in Boston or Edmonton.

That would be like if the new CEO of Wells Fargo wondered why he was getting so much scrutiny from the Fed and SEC when he was taking over for the guy who was fired the day before when news broke of the fraudulent and fake account scandal.

Like, dude... your organization was massively dysfunctional and massively f***ed up a deadline deal by completely neglecting a NTC they signed a player to. The org doesn't get to skirt punishment just because there's a new guy in charge.

The issue is that previous ownership and the NHL didn't disclose the investigations to him during the sale process. I don't disagree with the punishment but absolutely get where he's coming from.
