Yes, but that's also showing a league-wide inability to accurately value defense. We got a whole bunch of elite defensive players, whose perceived value is less around the league.

I guarantee you if Aho chooses to cherry pick all season long and go from his 80ish point average to 95 points, but go from +20 or so to -10, he'll get Hart votes.

If Jordan Staal scores 25 G but goes from a + player against the league's best to -15, he'll get Selke votes.

If Jaccob Slavin were to score 50+ points, but be a - player defensively, he'll get Norris votes.

I just don't think the league, even the elitest of the elite hockey minds, really watch our team. Too many teams to watch every night. For most hockey minds, points is what we really look at to value a player.

Also I looked over the hockeydb reference page for the regular season. Trivia Tuesday - there are two - rated players (+/-) on the Canes in the 2022-2023 regular season. Can you name them? (no cheating!)

Coghlan is one of them, trying to think of the other.

just looked the other one up, no surprise.
Bingo on Coghlan. The other was not a regular player.

Also what's interesting is that the +/- values are all less than the previous year. I think that's largely because our goalies went from a 0.922 and 0.912 to a 0.903/0.909/0.910, and our shooting % probably went down a bit as well in 22'-23'.

Torts hated his guts, yeah? And they clearly are hitching their horse all the way to that wagon.

What the heck are the Flyers thinking over there?
That's a Cap of $3.5M/yr for the next 3 Seasons.

Easy. Briere's ripping it all down and knows that he won't be anywhere near the cap for the next three seasons. Good for him and good for Flyers fans that their team finally has a direction (aka. tank city).

Alex Newhook is a very talented player.
SCOUTING REPORT

Went from college hockey, to the American Hockey League to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the course of a few weeks and did not look out of place. Has the kind of speed that can back off opponents and he excels at putting the puck in places where his teammates can score. He will have to get stronger to survive the NHL grind and needs to shoot more to keep opposing defenses honest. Can play any forward position.

Not a big fan of Hayes at all but that's a steal for the Blues, how did no other team try to outbid that? $3.5M/yr for him is great value. We don't have a spot for him with Koko and Staal here but if we did I would've been thrilled to do that trade.

We waited all the time for a Hayes for a 6th swap. Let down

Correction a 6th for 50% retention.

Briere isnt as magical as we thought
tells me that the Flyers weren't able to broker a trade for Krug to somewhere that he would have accepted. Likely why it wasn't the bigger deal involving Sanheim as well. Can't fault him or Krug in this, St Louis were the ones that gave him that NTC.

Flyers still have 2 retention spots so have to imagine one of the two will be TDA, the other will be held until the deadline.

This doesn't make sense; the new contract wouldn't kick in until July 1st right?
kings likely have other moves to make this work. They have 9 million in space and this deal likely only takes another 4-5 million from them. They still have other needs too. They likely want to secure a couple of other deals first to avoid being taken to the cleaners because they have no cap space.
