Aho being the one outlier.

Jordan Staal (arguably) is another outlier considering that they gave a soon-to-be-35 year old 4 years. They also extended Fast, Anderson, and Raanta to shorter contracts AND gave Orlov+Bunting high-dollar, short-term UFA contracts. They were generally far busier in UFA than they've typically been in other offseasons.

I know DW and Dundon are seen as quite shrewd negotiators but these offers for Pinto, Zegras, and Drysdale are worse than shrewd.
What's the latest info on what Zegras is being offered? Pinto at least makes sense from the perspective that they don't currently have any cap space.

I’ll never understand how that guy didn’t become a regular NHL’er. Not some star, but at least an everyday player. He seemed 99% of the way there and just flatlined.

Ive thought the same thing. I liked his game when he played a few for us in the NHL. I feel like he just got a bad break being in the Canes organization with how deep our D has been for the last 5-6 seasons.

He was waived and cleared waivers 2 times (I think) while with Carolina, so it was more than just a deep Carolina team.

Just goes to show how hard it is for players to make and stick in the NHL. I liked McKeown and also thought he'd at least get a shot at a #6 D, but I guess he was just too vanilla. He was ok at a lot of things, but nothing stood out.

Guys like DeAngelo and Ghost have that offense that stands out.
Guys like Chatfield have a lot of speed and aggression that stands out.
Guys like Smith and Cole have size and physical play that some teams like.

Guys like McKeown, Bear and even Haydn Fleury to an extent, just seem to lack anything that lets them stand out among other 5/6/7 candidates.

I was going to say he's the RHD version of Fleury, he was solid overall, but unspectacular. A guy you can use as an injury fill-in but doesn't really bring anything in particular of high-value. Jack of all trades master of none type

Southern outsider with a question. Has Carolina resolved it's AHL/ECHL situation and if not has Carolina started farming out talent?

We have a working relationship with Norfolk to presumably have Perets and possibly other players there. We have agreements in place for AHL teams to take players but no announcements yet

Supposedly everything will be resolved next year. The first thing that absolutely needs to happen however is the AHL kick the Wolves out or tell them to suck it up and affiliate.
Ahhh! Thank you. Preds would like to make a claim for a RW, please. :)

We will grant you, absolutely free, one Chad Larose! Hey, you didn't specify the player was still active lol 😁

(Chad Larose is kind of a meme/inside joke on this board)

Always liked the Sutter. Shame his career took a nosedive after the 2012 trade.

I think we'd prefer a 1-2 line RW who is active and ready for a Calder Cup run. a C would be nice too.

As for Chad Larose. No. ;)

Part of the stinginess from Anaheim about the Zegras and Drysdale situation was apparently because ownership was setting some sort of internal budget as long as they were going to suck. I understand that, but still, at least to me, I would use the opportunity of open cap space to lock up a guy like him long-term in exchange for potential savings later. Upon hearing what ownership desired, however, it was clear that their FO's hands were tied.

I'm also not convinced Zegras is as good as advertised. Sure he has 10/10 skill, but is he the forward that can help your team win a championship (assuming he has a good surrounding cast)? I don't know. Defensively he leaves a lot to be desired.

In any case, I think this is a good deal for both parties. A lot of the really long term deals that fans love these days are way riskier than we think. It's possible that young players don't progress the way we think they will to age into the contracts.

yeah this is just asking for another Tkachuk situation down the line, or a contact 4 years from now where the AAV is in the 8 digit range instead of starting with an 8. As much as I get the whole internal budget thing (I mean we had Karmanos as an owner FFS, that's his entire MO), there are areas where that shouldn't be applied in the context of long-term finances as well. This was a big one, and a big mistake IMO.
