I've always felt that he's the Gorilla Monsoon of hockey with over the top obnoxious one eyed commentary defending the "Good Guys" no matter what they do. If you accept that's what he is then he's tolerable.
Big time. 5-10 years ago, he was ridiculous, but entertaining. Now he's just hard to listen to.
He's been such an unapologetic prick for decades, actively making it his personality. If its now tough for him to call games, good. Its been tough for us to listen to it for 30+ years.

I don't have a frame of reference for your example, but after turning it on at your suggestion, it seems like 90% of the time he's only with it enough to say the names of the players as they touch the puck. If he tries to call the play it's very slow and hard to listen to or just ends with awkward dead space. Also seems like Brickley is overspending much of the time to fill the dead air. Very not good. He shouldn't be doing this anymore.
The reference is to a guy who had a stroke in the middle of his high profile Senate race, which led to a whole lot of assholes still making fun of him even though he's basically fully recovered now.
Would you want that guy to make the calls during a fast moving sporting event?
