Yes probably but they don't have to be in the gutter and this contract won't help them return to contention any sooner. If I was their front office I'd be making moves now to set up the rebuild, they're just going full steam ahead as if they're still contenders (coinciding with Ovi's goal record chase). My first step would've been trading Wilson for assets, not handing him a long term deal that will be an anchor. Ovi's goal record chase could happen during the early transition to rebuild.
Agreed. I mean, I'm thrilled Ovi plays for a team who would do that for him. I'm rooting like hell for him to get 895 goals. It would almost be as historic as that one time Ottawa made the playoffs.

On the other hand, damn they are going to be bad for a long time. They already have a terrible farm system. I thought they were finally starting to make steps at the deadline by trading away Orlov and Hathaway, and getting Sandin.

If I were GM MacLellan, I'd try to go for a half-Calgary and trade for some older vets with 1-2 years left on their deals. Shake up the room and try to make the playoffs. At this stage, they can't really trade Ovechkin or Wilson or Backstrom or Kuznetsov or Carlson for fair value because of the flat cap. If they had started acting on those moves earlier they could have had some more long-term pieces in place.

This offseason just feels like doubling down with more expensive contracts on a roster that was already bad in 22'-23'. Now, they don't even have cap space to take on a cap dump for draft picks. They set themselves up for this also by only having 1 defenseman signed (Carlson) as they approached the end of last season.

Also not sure where to post this but Puckdoku has the Canes in today. I got a 56 uniqueness which is by far the best I have ever done and will ever do.

I mean, damn that team is in a pickle....$700k over the cap w/21 guys signed and not much latitude. They've got one kid they can send down and I suppose they will be putting Pacioretty on LTIR, but they will certainly have some issues when he's healthy. Something seemingly has to give.

Is it possible to use one player in more than one spot in puckdoku? And have there been any cases where one player could take all nine spots?

Rules question on Puckdoku:

I know they say when it's a stat-related question they have to have been a member of the team when they did the stat. But for something like today, "Olympic Gold Medal" winner, do they have to have been a member of the team in question when the NHL season paused and then they won an Olympic Gold Medal on a completely separate team from the one they were currently contracted with? That's unclear to me and it's keeping me from completing it for the day because I've got one square I can't figure out if it's one way but absolutely could if it's the other way and I don't want to get it wrong.

EDIT: nevermind they put the rule right in the description of the square when you click on it.

I boned this one up by confusing Bob and Gary Suter like a dumb f***.

The other day Todd Bertuzzi was a possible answer in all 9 boxes. I think it was before they changed the rule for the stat based categories (I want to say that day it was 30+ goals in a season but I don’t really remember) having to have been achieved while a member of the team in the opposite row/column though

They took back a bunch of junk in addition to the first being top 10 protected. Grier didn’t do well here.

I don't entirely agree with you. Most of the contractual detritus that San Jose took back have 1-2 seasons remaining. The key thing that makes San Jose's ownership happy is only needing to retain $1.5M on Karlsson's cap hit. In that sense, Grier did in fact actually win here, because almost all of the other bad stuff mainly goes away after next season.

Honestly, I think that it's a fair trade for all sides. San Jose's ownership doesn't need to take on much salary at all in years 3 and 4, Pittsburgh is able to take a massive roster reset at a cost of a 1st and a 2nd, and Montreal is the beneficiary of Petry's NTC.

Big fan of Wilson’s on ice impact and I was an advocate for the Canes calling the Caps about him but man that is a terrible terrible contract. They will be lucky to get 2-3 good years out of it, the last 4-5 will be a disaster. Basically a thank you for your past service contract…
He will become allergic to his jersey
