I think the Bratt contract is the best precedent for Necas if he has another very good year. Just slightly above Svechnikov mainly because more UFA seasons are bought out.

Man, that contract is a risk to age poorly, though the Caps admittedly have a decent history of hitching onto the right veterans (which is why it took them this long to finally have a down year).

Big fan of Wilson’s on ice impact and I was an advocate for the Canes calling the Caps about him but man that is a terrible terrible contract. They will be lucky to get 2-3 good years out of it, the last 4-5 will be a disaster. Basically a thank you for your past service contract…

They're going to be in the gutter for a while after OV retires anyway so probably moot.

I don’t see this as a big deal. He hits the wall in the next few years. So what? The Caps have one of the worst outlooks in the league either way. 22-23 was just year 1 outside of the playoffs. There’s much more pain to come. In the NHL, 8-10 years of competitive irrelevance is not unusual.

Yes probably but they don't have to be in the gutter and this contract won't help them return to contention any sooner. If I was their front office I'd be making moves now to set up the rebuild, they're just going full steam ahead as if they're still contenders (coinciding with Ovi's goal record chase). My first step would've been trading Wilson for assets, not handing him a long term deal that will be an anchor. Ovi's goal record chase could happen during the early transition to rebuild.
