Be a man. Shove those memories down deep where you hide the rest of your feelings.
* runs out of space *
Oh, hello there repressed memory, how wonderful of you to join me today
* cries deeply *

We talk about playing without Aho, Patches and Andersen, but watching the caps tonight, they are without Backstrom, Oshie, Wilson, Hagelin, and Connor Brown. Carlson missed a few games and they were without Orlov for 1/2 the season as well.

They are 7-2-1 in their last 10 and are 1 point out of a wild card spot.

To be fair, the Caps are without Oshie and Backstrom as often as were without Andersen, probably more often.

True and it makes their run over the years even more impressive. Still, this year adds in Wilson, Hagelin, Brown and time lost for Orlov and Carlson as well.

I have always argued that the primary reason why the East is so ridiculously deep every single season is because Pittsburgh, Boston, and Washington simply refuse to die in the normal way that older teams used to do not so long ago. Modern sports medicine, diet, and training is likely to blame for the top staying on top for this long, but also because (this is more anecdotal) peak defensive age seems to occur well after peak offensive age. I mean, they'll eventually need to rebuild one day, but that truly might not happen until Crosby/Malkin/Ovechkin/Bergeron are in their 40s.

Detroit is slipping after a good first quarter. The ticks of the deadline clock will get louder over time as Larkin remains unsigned.

The zombie teams in the East (Pittsburgh/Washington), among others, are making their run at the expense of the upstarts. I still think that Larkin is going to re-sign in Detroit because he can see the forest from the trees, but still, I don't think that it's Detroit's moment to shine just yet.

If he and Yzerman are on the same page with that, it could be a Recchi/Weight situation where a team gets him as a rental knowing he's going back to Detroit afterwards.

Hard not to be but not proportionate to the amount of money they spent
Why not? They’re building. The results don’t come instantly most of the time. Detroit’s young players have to develop, Fabbri and Vrana are both significant contributors that have been hurt or out. Ottawa has had injuries as well. They’ve both improved to the point where if everyone is healthy they can put an interesting and fun team to watch on the ice, but if they lose guys they don’t have the depth and they’re going to drop down. I’m not sure why you’d go after them, neither was really expected to do much more than be better than the basement, or/and show that they’re on the way up. Which they both are.

Bertuzzi as well for Detroit.

One difference Carolina had is that we had Faulk, Pesce and Slavin entrenched as defensemen before we did or turn-around. Adding Dougie and CDH gave us an incredible defensive group that made up for goaltending deficiencies (and forward deficiencies in 18-19).

Detroit's defense isn't nearly at that level, nor is Ottawas.

Detroit spent 20 million in UFA to try to win not just be better than the basement. Bring some winning culture to the squad as some key players come to UFA (don’t want have to reset). As we learned for 10 years, being better than the basement is worse than being the basement. Being the basement at least gets you a shot at a good player in the draft.

Ottawa to the same extent, minus the UFA issues. That 20 million is to turn the rebuild in winning while developing.

I swear some folks think we're still in the 2010's and need to pluck every piece of trash off waivers.

You show some damn respect to Martin Frk and Ty Rattie!

Detroit and Ottawa proving winning the off-season means very little

I know the story that Giroux wanted to play for Ottawa but man I was hoping we'd snag him. Long shot yes but he was quoted as being impressed with RBA during the All-Star game. Oh well.

IDK what's up with Detroit. I don't dislike them but one less team to worry about per say is fine with me.

Its just injuries just like the high spending blue jackets. Whatever keeps that cannon from going off or a stupid octopus off the ice is a win in my book

Well that’s what Detroit is doing, trying to win. Having good patches and bad ones as they learn. I don’t think they assumed it would be immediate and consistent winning, it’s not even Xmas so it’s not like the season is ready to be judged. I doubt they thought they were actually making the playoffs, nor did they know who they would be missing. I don’t think they’ll be stuck in our former mid range suck. I think they’ll take it for a year or two as they can see clear progress. It’s a great year for a hiccup in the development with this draft anyways. Ditto pretty much all of that for Ottawa.

Five minutes left in the game, Blues leading 5-1.

With the exception of faceoffs, Ryan O’Reilly’s stat line is ALL zeroes. I don’t mean just that he has a 0-0-0 (which he does). He also has zero penalties. Zero shots on goal. Zero shot attempts. Zero hits. Zero turnovers. Zero takeaways. Zero blocked shots.

This from a guy who is going to end up with 16+ minutes in a 5-1 win. I don’t understand how it’s even possible to be THAT invisible in a game. Like, just… do something.

That's got to be a reporting bug.
