I think we’ll see this trend more. Teams trying to get a head of the curve before they gain value.
With the cap going up, even lower end 4 D will get close to 5 million AAV. Ifhe doesn’t pan out, a 800k buyout will be less that 1 percent of the cap. No harm no foul.
Yes, similar risk to the Kotkaniemi extension. But they only have 2 more years to evaluate before he turns 25 in March 2025 and the buyout goes up to 2/3, so less time to make that move than Carolina has. Yes, he's 3 months older than Kotkaniemi, but the July 1 cutoff gives Carolina one more season to evaluate.
The amazing thing to me is that they signed him to a this 7 year extension, and he's still waiver exempt. Buffalo could (won't, but could!) send him down to the minors with no risk this year.
Edit: Also, this was the reaction around the NHL in 2017 when Carolina signed Slavin for 7 years and Pesce for 6 years, wasn't it? They had a larger sample size, but they are a huge part of Carolina's cap flexibility now.
Edit again: not as much as I thought, there is a much larger positive reaction on the main board to those contracts than I remembered from 2017.
