I don't think much was out there for Dubas to sign that summer when it came to goalies. I think the baffling part was going with 5 years.

In retrospect almost certainly should have made a trade instead.

I appreciated Dubas' talk about 'process' but you'd think he'd be able to accept by then that evaluating goaltending was a Blindspot for himself.

Even with the POV that goaltending can be largely voodoo (which I don't disagree with), why give a guy so much money and term....

That Dubas is a real genius with goalies. Nobody in Pitt understood the deal when he extended him to that contract, yet he did.
I wouldn’t let Dubas find my team a goalie if our beer league tender called at 8 pm saying he can’t make the 10 pm game…….even if we were playing in the Soo.

Last night in Buffalo, Ryan Mcleod scored a hat trick for the Sabres despite only having 2 shots on goal for the game.

Also, the Sabres scored a goal in th 3rd period despite having ZERO shots on goal the entire period.

Quick edit, it looks like somehow the NHL found a way to edit the stats on McLeod and gave him a 3rd shot on goal.

Yet the 2nd part of it remains, the Sabres scored a goal in the 3rd period but officially have been credited with zero shots on goal for the period.

Former Maple Leafs GM and current Penguins GM and President Kyle Dubas has been eviscerated by NHL Insider Frank Seravalli in a heated rant.

We've already seen signs that members of the media and fans in Pittsburgh were beginning to turn on ex-Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas, and another big one has dropped.

Dubas was back in the spotlight this week after the Pittsburgh Penguins suffered a terrible loss to Seattle where the Kraken scored three straight in the third to win the game 4-2.

That was followed up by putting goaltender Tristan Jarry on waivers, who was given a five-year, $26.8 million contract back when Dubas took over in Pittsburgh as the President of Hockey Operations and General Manager.

While the Jarry contract has turned out to be a huge mistake on the part of Dubas, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff contends it's far from the only error he's made over the past year.

A Clueless Dubas has built a Pens team that is 32nd (last) in GA/G @ 3.67 and the 30th worst sv% at .888

I mean I think Dubas took an unfavourable spot for a 'win now' environment, but he really has done a poor job in those circumstances.
Buyer's Remorse in Pittsburgh in already underway.

While the Jarry contract has turned out to be a huge mistake on the part of Dubas, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff contends it's far from the only error he's made over the past year.

"It feels like not enough critical thought and analysis was put into his decision making in Toronto, particularly since he tried to strong-arm the Leafs and wrestle control from president Brendan Shanahan. Now, it feels like the only deal that the Penguins will rue more than any of the ones Dubas made in his first year at the helm is the seven-year deal that they gave Dubas himself, one of the longest and richest of any executive in hockey."

So we can say Dubas isn't doing wonderfully in Pittsburgh, but wrt Jarry, just to list his stats prior to re-signing. Two years leading up to the contract with a minimum 80 games played (40 games per season).

I'm not making a judgement, except to say he isn't earning now, but his play leading up to the contract was top 10 in a number of categories.

Yeah, and if people don't like Dubas' goalie-finding ability, I'm not sure why they'd want him to walk in and immediately abandon their established #1 goalie to find a different one in a weak goalie year. Even last year, he was +2.6 goals saved above expected. But facts have never gotten in the way of Dubas bashing.

Don't think it was so much abandoning their established #1 goalie as it was handing out that handcuffing contract to him. And not even two years it is has blown up in their face like most predicted.

It was pretty much either abandon him or re-sign him to a contract like that. No established #1 goalie in his late 20s hitting UFA for the first time is taking scraps or one year deals. Goaltending is too volatile.

Signing Jarry to that contract was just like Edmonton signing Campbell to his contract. Both ended up with the same out come. If you looked past the surface level numbers you saw what they truly were, and that was a goalie that will not be reliable at that cap hit for that long.

Excuses never got in the way of defending your boy though thats for sure.

Lets just ignore the plethora of other failure goalies that this bozo bet on. Ye he was just wrong this one time with Jarry

As yes, I'm sure your dislike of Jarry was a result of "looking past the surface level numbers", "seeing what they truly were", and knowing that they would suddenly turn into a pumpkin in their 7th NHL season, and not who happened to sign them.

Signing any goalie for term and money is dangerous. That's what I've been telling you the whole time. But going in a different direction on their core pieces clearly wasn't something Pittsburgh ownership was interested in, and it's not like the core had a lot of time for the team to start a search for a new #1 goalie.

If you think he's so horrible at finding goalies (ignoring that Campbell and Samsonov had top-10 seasons under us), you'd think you would agree with him not abandoning the #1 goalie he had to find one himself.

Same old best player on the planet ... McDavid does it again.

No one close to his skill and speed.

Might be players as fast, and might players as skilled, but not in combination.
Yep. Been saying McD is at least two tiers above everyone else in the league.

Landeskog, 32, has not played an NHL game since the Avalanche won the 2022 Stanley Cup. He underwent knee surgery after that season concluded. The knee required a cartilage transplant in May 2023.

The forward has been skating on and off since last January, but this is the first time he has participated in limited fashion in a team practice.

Bednar, when speaking to media on Monday, denied reports that Landeskog was unable to skate on back-to-back days, but provided no updates on his status otherwise.

Landeskog remains without a timeline for his return to the Avalanche lineup.

What are the betting odds he's healthy for the beginning of the playoffs?

Honestly Jarry just had to put up decent numbers to justify that contract and he completely has flopped

Dubas’ biggest weakness is clearly assessing goaltending talent

And I don't think that should necessarily be a fault in of itself - there's plenty of evidence of goalies being very difficult to predict over longer term outside of the very small handful of star goalies in the league.

But he also should know this too - so don't give out big money long term deals for that position.....
